Hi, Wycombe fan here. Your 19 year old centre back Jason McCarthy has signed for us on a one month loan deal. Can you shed any light on how good he is please. Our centre back is out injured so it would be nice to get a good replacement. Thanks Ron
Thanks Lamby. Sounds exciting. I hope the loan can be extended until our centre back returns. Here is a link to the announcement
Happy to agree with Lamby if this lad carries on making the progress he is at his current rate I can certainly see he will make a Saints skipper. If we can hang on to him that is!!
He is a good player, but has to be seen if he can play in the hustle and bustle of a lower league. Not getting at Wycombe, but I know we have been disappointed with youngsters lent from a higher league in the past. I think the difference may be that our lads are brought up with a work ethic, unlike some big time Charlies.
I've only ever heard positive things about Jason McCarthy, he seems to be highly rated, and already has minutes for the first team under his belt. However, with no disrespect to Wycombe, the fact that our other 2 young centre backs Jordan Turnbull and Jack Stephens are on loan in League 1 and the Championship, while we're sending McCarthy all the way down 3 divisions into League 2, doesn't fill me with confidence about his development.
In the handful of games I have seen of our under 21s in the last year he has always been a stand out performer. Decent positional play and seems very composed. As Fran rightly points out, although he is well built for his age, there is always a question mark over being able to handle the gulf in physicality between youth football and senior. Hopefully he will do you a great service and help you pip Portsmouth to the automatic promotion places
McCarthy is better then Turnbull. A month actually playing will be better then being benched all the time like Stephens.
I think the key thing is he is being sent to a good club with an excellent manager. Jordan Ibe (Liverpool) was developed at Wycombe. Williamson (from Southampton?) was captain of Wycombe. Matt Phillips (went to Blackpool) from Wycombe. All brilliant. Our manager is well respected for bringing on young players and those that have moved on have spoken very highly of him and the Wycombe set up. So hopefully it will be a good move for him. Not sure about just one month though. Hopefully he will want to, and be allowed to, stay longer.
How long is your lad out injured for? I guess if it doesn't work out for either party, then a short loan to begin with makes sense. They can always be extended. I know Wycombe have a strong team for the divison, but do you think defence is the area you need to strengthen to give you the best chance of promotion?
I can't speak for all Wycombe fans but I would say that, with our full defence squad available, we probably have the strongest defence in the League. Certainly last year whilst we had Mawson (from Brentford). We have a very good defender named Pierre who several clubs have their eye on. I think/hope that Jason McCarthy and him could be a formidable duo. I think our center back is out until the New Year. Our left side defender Jacobson is undoubtedly the best in the League at that position. As is our goalkeeper Our problem is that we have a very small squad and are therefore vulnerable to injuries
Don't read too much into it. It's only a month so it's relatively harmless, and it's not like we can just choose where he can go. You don't just call up a Championship club and ask them if they will not only pay the wages of one of your youngsters, but also guarantee him a first team spot. Maybe League 2 is his only option right now. At least he might get the chance to get one over on Pompey. A rare thing for Saints players these days. Hope he does well for you Ron, looks like a quality player.
Good to know, impressive record. Is Pierre your only other fit senior centre back? If so, I guess McCarthy is more or less guaranteed a starting spot for the time being?
Seen on a couple of other threads that the loan has been extended to January. I guess we can flip this thread and ask Ron how Jason has been playing? Results have been mixed since his arrival, but he seems to have kept his place
