Anyone not old enough to have enjoyed the 2003 Cup Final is excused (where are you going, Beddy?). I'm sure the techies can put up suitable links, but I noticed that Brett Ormerod is back on FA Cup action and not buying a Subway franchise. What a vastly under-rated player he was. Slipped under everyone's radar while James Beattie grabbed the headlines, but was a truly horrible bugger to play against as he was a constant nuisance. Most people's favourite memories are of his FA Cup semi-final goal, and of course it is up there for me. But favourite is the goal he scored at Anfield very early in a 2-1 win there. I didn't think I could go and had to get a ticket in the home section of the Anfield Road right next to the Saints fans. Great day. Of course, you can't mention Brett without think of his sartorial elegance which earned him the nickname "Steptoe" and caused WGS to say he'd seen "better dressed wounds" (classic). The Labour Party are fighting for his services. They reckon of they get him on the podium he'll make Corbyn look smart. Anyone else bored with the astonishing news that England have managed to beat a team that would have lost to St Trinian's s 3rd XI may like to add their own memory of Brett. Alternatively, shall we share memories of under-rated Saints heroes?
One of those players that holds deep affection at all his former clubs due to the fact that he always gave 100% and came across as a down to earth sort of guy. Very underrated by the experts and pundits alike, never got to much praise, but I bet his team mates rated him, as did us supporters. I heard he was now modelling for gargoyles?
I remember when he returned to SMS with another club and the Northam sang. 'You've got Brett Ormerod.'** ** For those too young to remember, Saints fans always used to sing, 'We've got Brett Ormerod.'
Red and white stripes + white shorts = Villa Park + Brett Ormerod = pure joy and a very sore throat! What a day that was. Semi-finals are the ultimate for drama, and previously I had been at White Hart Lane (George Lawrence et al being repeatedly fouled by Hanson and co) and Highbury (Heath uughhh) along with Terry Curran one and only moment at the Dell Atmosphere at semis is second to none - even the JPTat St Marys was electric!
My favourite match...a lovely day and the right result. I travelled up with a lovely old lady (who had a tea flask for sharing) who told me she had to come alone because her husband had had to go into hospital to have a leg amputated. Glad she had her priorities right.
I actually don't think he was overrated. He wasn't a great footballer. He was a great favourite and I loved him because of his work effort and none stop running, but he was not a particularly good footballer if we're being honest. The goal at Villa Park is immense in our history.
His terrace song was crass and in poor taste(aren't most of them), but it would usually generate a snigger from opposing supporters. Posh spice is a slapper Her knickers smell like cod And when she's ****ing beckham She thinks of Ormerod He played like Jamie Vardy if you're annoyingly young
I always wished he'd pull his socks up or push them right down. They just hung there halfway. He was showing Jack Grealish the way. Have to admit, I always preferred Kevin Phillips.
