Sam Allardyce agrees to become new Sunderland manager on a two-year deal
    • Sunderland are without a Premier League win so far this season
    • Dick Advocaat walked away from Sunderland after West Ham draw
    • Allardyce has previously managed Newcastle in the Premier League
    • Ellis made the 60-year-old his No 1 target for the vacant position

Sam Allardyce will be announced as the new manager of Sunderland in the next 24 hours after agreeing a two-year-deal with the struggling Premier League club.

The 60-year-old former West Ham, Newcastle and Bolton boss is still in Spain but talks between his representatives and Sunderland owner Ellis Short were successfully completed today.

Sportsmail revealed yesterday that Short had moved for Allardyce, who comes in after Dick Advocaat left the Stadium of Light early this week following his failure to secure a single win in the first eight Premier League games of the season.

Dick Advocaat left from his post as Sunderland boss without a win in eight Premier League matches

    ALLARDYCE'S FIRST SIX GAMES
Oct 17: West Brom (a) - Premier League

    Oct 25: Newcastle (h) - Premier League

    Nov 1: Everton (a) - Premier League

    Nov 7: Southampton (h) - Premier League

Nov 23: Crystal Palace (a) - Premier League

    Nov 28: Stoke (h) - Premier League

And despite reports that any agreement would only be until the end of the season, Allardyce has agreed a two year contract with Sunderland’s American owner.

The 60-year-old had originally let his reservations about the position be known but owner Ellis Short was determined to land his No 1 target.

The American billionaire believes Allardyce is the man who can rescue the club from relegation.

Allardyce will kick off his Black Cats reign at West Brom a week on Saturday before a home unveiling against North-East rivals Newcastle, the club he managed for just eight months after being appointed in 2007.

Allardyce - who was sacked by the Magpies and has a frosty relationship with the Toon Army - will become the first person to take charge of both Sunderland and Newcastle.

Personally I`d rather this than an end of season thing. So many more options.
I`d like to know what Short promised him.

Two years, not even that as its mid October, but that does not sound like planning for the long term. Then again, if he does eight months he'll be your longest serving gaffer for many a year! <laugh>

Well I don't think it will be pretty but pretty is not what we need at the moment.
I think it's a fairly sensible appointment. Maybe he can sort out the defense & bring some stability.

    Club Statement

    Allardyce appointed as manager

    Published: 09 October, 2015

New manager confirmed on two-year deal.

Sunderland AFC have confirmed the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager.

The 60-year-old has agreed to a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light and takes charge of the Black Cats with immediate effect.

Speaking about the appointment, chairman Ellis Short said: “I am very pleased to welcome Sam to our football club.

“Sunderland is a club he knows well and he was the obvious best choice for the job. He has vast experience of managing in the Premier League and an understanding first-hand of the north east and the passion of our fans, which will stand him in great stead.

“I would like to assure our fans that once Dick made us aware of his intention to leave, Lee Congerton oversaw an organised and structured recruitment process, that bore very little resemblance to what has been described in the media.

“For example, this was a very popular job, proactively sought after by a large number of managers - contrary to much of what has been portrayed. The process was made easier by the fact that Sam was such an obvious choice.

“The other misconception is that Sam had to be persuaded to join us; nothing could be further from the truth. From the very beginning, he understood the importance of this job and showed great enthusiasm for the role and a desire to be part of moving this club forward.”

Mr. Allardyce expressed his delight at joining the club, stating: “I have enjoyed my break from football and now I’m raring to get back. I met with Ellis and we spoke at length about the club and his ambitions and I knew I wanted to be part of that.

“I hope to be able to help to bring the stability and success that everyone wants.

“Of course it’s a challenging job, but it’s something I have experience of in the past. I’m looking forward to working with the players and of course I will be relying on the help of the Sunderland supporters, whose tremendous passion I have experienced first-hand. I can’t wait to get started.”

Enjoying over 25 years of experience in English football management, Allardyce began his coaching career with West Bromwich Albion, before moving into management with Blackpool and Notts County. An eight-year spell at Bolton Wanderers followed in 1999 where he enjoyed huge success, guiding the Lancashire club from the Championship to the English top flight and bringing European football to the club for the first time in their history.

After success with Bolton, Allardyce was approached by Newcastle United, where he spent a short spell on Tyneside, before a quick return to management with Blackburn Rovers in 2008. After two years at Ewood Park, Allardyce was appointed manager at West Ham in 2011, guiding The Hammers back to the Barclays Premier League one year later.

After three years at Upton Park, Allardyce left West Ham in the summer with the club having qualified for European football.

Allardyce is currently fifth in the all-time list of Premier League games managed, having taken charge of 400 top flight games with four different clubs. During this time he has claimed six Manager of the Month awards.

Prior to entering into management Allardyce enjoyed a 19-year playing career, predominantly at Bolton Wanderers. He spent the 1980-81 campaign on Wearside, playing 26 times for the Black Cats and captaining the club. Under Peter Reid’s tenure, Allardyce returned to Sunderland AFC in a coaching capacity, as Director of Youth.

yeah happy with 2 years. End of season would have just been back to the drawing board so I was a bit depressed about earlier reports.

He many not be the manager Sunderland deserves, but he is the manager Sunderland needs. Can't say I am overwhelmed with the appointment, but hopefully relegation will be a thing of the past. He will get points on the board. Not sure about Nolan though. That ****in chicken dance. Beat the Skunks in second game in charge? Can he keep the trend going? He would love to stick it to Ashley though.

    Chuffed with this.

He'll not suffer the fools like his predecessors have but he has the nous to not be stupid about it like DiCanio.

Im confident he'll make us solid and we'll start winning games.

The club statement`s a bit different to what the media were chucking about.

"Allardyce returned to Sunderland AFC in a coaching capacity, as Director of Youth" - That`s interesting,

Fantastic news and the first decent appoinment since Steve Bruce, people don't ask for experience for nothing in jobs and he has loads of premiership experience and is proven to deliver...I bet Defoe doen't get stuck on the left wing under Sam's management. I think he is the perfect appoinment and well done to Ellis for exposing more of the press **** that goes on in this country and the bias against NE clubs from the Southern press especially. Come on you reds and I for one will be backing big Sam 100% as he trys to bring some proper work ethic to some of those lazy bastards in red/white who pretend to be professional footballers!

Happy with that. Good statement by the club too putting the press in their place.

Wins against WBA and Mags is very possible and would get the fans right behind Sam from the start. I think the players will want to impress him from the word go. He will be desperate for a derby win too.

Has anyone noticed he is our new Manager and not head coach this to me means he has overall say on transfers that could be the best news of all if we get rid of the DOF which has been a disaster at our club
