And only one of them can be classed as being the successful.

Even so, £40 million was ludicrous money, epitomised just what was wrong with our club

Edit: I think you missed out Emre as well, OT

Souness wasted so much money on players, obvious ones Boumsong, Owen etc. But he also signed the likes of Amdy bloody Faye. For me that really showed how low we'd gone. From playing Inter Milan in the San Siro, to signing Amdy Faye.

None of them were successful in my opinion
although Luque did finish off that rout at SOS swaying it in his favour <whistle>

Go back further for me.... Dalglish.

He dismantled a champions league team and left us with a load of poor signings. Gullit sunk us further.

SBR revatilised the team and feel around the club and was sacked in arguably the worst move any NUFC chairman has ever made.... no wait, fat freddy followed that up with Souness didnt he.

Woeful signings such as BOUMSONG (favour for his club at Ibrox) followed by even worse signings by big fat sam his successor leaving us with a legacy of overpaid mercenaires on long term contracts, past their best and not an ounce of passion between them.... personified in that puke Owen.

Our demise started with Dalglish, Gullit kicked us while we down, SBR gave us hope, Souness dismantled it, BFS rubbed salt in the wounds and we have only just started to pic ourselves up.

There are a few rumoured background reasons for Keegan leaving which ultimately got the ball rolling. Had he have stayed, had we have won the league with the 13 point gap we had.... too late now for what ifs. I just hope lessons are learned, going forward we dont spend big money on flops and stop offering lucrative deals and lenghty terms to has been players.

Well said <ok> I think the ball is rolling again, on Newcastle getting into the big time. But its going to take time. I dont think Europe will happen this season in all honesty. This season should be about cementing ourselves in the league, and not suffering from the notorious 2nd season syndrome! So, maybe in 2012-13 we can worry about Europe. If we dont rush things, and be patient, we have the potential to be a real force again. Just hope our fans can understand that, and dont start calling for Pardews head in Feburary when we're in 11th.

    Yep. I did.

Just checked on NUFC.com and they still have his fee as TBC. Anyone know what was paid?

    EDIT: Wiki says £3.8 million...

Europe won't happen under MA and AP in my opinion.

Those certainly were the days, I remeber watching highlights of us winning, what felt like, every week on the ITV equivalent of MOTD. Come to think of it that could be the turning point, the need to shelf MOTD for a while and bring back Des Lynam for us to be contenders again???

I wouldn't be so sure to dismiss Europe under them.

It does after all provide another lucrative revenue stream and we all know how Mike likes to drink from that particular style of river.

With this transfer policy, we can pretty much rule Europe out imo.

Well, that would have been a great signing had he not been injured half the time!

I dont think it can be fully ruled out, i think its just going to take time. Though, I wish Fat Mike would pull the finger out abit more this summer. Because, without 2 new strikers, one at the bare minimum, we could aswell start kissing the Premier League goodbye.

Agree totally, think we have gone as far as possible under Ashley. Mid table messiness until we find a buyer in my opinion!!!

This! He was a great player on his day! And, he'll always leave us the memory of that goal against the Mackems. Oh, and that screamer against Everton aswell. Didnt he score a pretty good goal against Reading too???
