Thanks for that Elland re Ian Harte. Brought some great memories of his free kicks and the power he put into them. Did he not also take a lot of penalties ? He did play for a short while at my local club, Sunderland (not that I went to see him) He retired from Bournmouth after their promotion to the Premier last season. A great Leeds player.
Haha! I only know what I read - and I read the articles to the end without jumping to any conclusions. I've not examined the evidence so I can't possibly declare a verdict myself. I can only observe that the full process of law was followed. And yes, as you say, IF his conviction is quashed, then of course it is valid - in fact, it is absolute! You do however have to question his case for appeal. Apparently it's evidence that was never presented to the jury for consideration. Either it's new evidence (and its substance has not been revealed as yet), or it was available to his very expensive legal team & they decided it wasn't worthwhile to present. The inference there to be taken is that the evidence has always been available, as the term 'new' was not used in the appeal submission. Places a large question mark over his legal team if indeed it was available. I agree that if she knowingly lied that she should be punished - but not used as an example. Let's face it, she was pissed. She would be relating the story as she remembered it, and someone who's pissed up doesn't normally have the best recall in the world. The accusers who are sober are the ones who should be made exaples of. I know it's not a part of this discussion, but I feel that there should be anonymity in these cases for the accused as well as the accuser, until a verdict is reached. Then the guilty can be named. Very unfair bias under the current rules.
If this woman is found guilty she should get the sentence Evans was going to get plus the time he did serve on top.... Being pissed isn't a licence to have no personal responsibility. The suggestion at the time was she went out to bed footballers and she only came up with this story because her boyfriend found out.... Let's see where the new evidence takes the case.
Just to be clear - if indeed she is guilty, then of course she should be dealt with in accordance with the law - but no need to introduce new penalites. I agree about being pissed. My understanding is that in cases like this, it is unusual for them to go forward when so much drink has been consumed - unless there is sufficient supporting evidence to make a strong case. This aears to have been one of those cases. (Not examined the evidence, so supposition on my part). Quite keen to find out what this evidence is (note I avoid using the term 'new'). Can't imagine for the life of me what it could be.
Don't think it would have helped that Evans was really cocky about the whole thing, even when it got to Court.
That's it, bored now. Hate these International breaks. Hey, hang on, this is the week the mighty Norn Irn secure their Euro 2016 finals place with Mr Dallas getting the winner and sweeping all before him. Not so bad then.
I read somewhere it wasn't because her boyfriend found out. She went in to the Police station to report her Handbag stolen and the Police encouraged her to press rape charges on Evans.
When it get's quashed and if I was Evans I'd go round suing everybody/group who has gone to the media and shouted Rapist at him.
Because he looked like he thought of it as a joke almost. Remember seeing him on the tele and he seemed like he was in absolute disbelief that the case was going to court let alone him being found guilty. I'm only going off a very hazy memory of a couple years ago but didn't she delete all the messages from her phone so no one can read what happened? Also the cameras show her walking to the hotel room by herself to meet them. It all seemed very strange and at the time I remember thinking this looks like they just want to make an example of someone mildly famous.
