Can't give marks based on MoTD highlights, and the only game I could get on the 'net was United (if they're top of the league, then Christ-on-a-bike, we - or Brendan - want ****ing shooting for not getting top four, as we won't). Great to see Danny Boy back (for how long?) as he's a class-and -a -half better than anything we've bought for two years, but the negative was Villa's second. Now Gestede is a beast, fair enough, but SAKHO was brushed past as if he was a ten stone fullback, or indeed, like Lovren and Skertel are used to being bullied on a weekly basis. Whatever Sakho's other qualities, or lack thereof, we never thought feebleness was one of his features.

As said, it may be a one-off, and Gestede is a monster, but every ox of a cf in the league (and Europa League) will have seen that and said 'fling us a cross or two in against him'. Never thought we'd have to worry about that with Sakho.

To be fair, he had the run on sakho. The guy is a beast in the air, something like 28 headed goals in last 3 years or something... That goal was just inch perfect cross with pace perfect height and gestede times his run perfectly. I think it's harsh to put too much blame on anyone for that.

The first goal however, that was a shocker. Can easily beaten by a bit of movement, skrtel and sakho marking no one right next to each other.. 3 at the back means you should have 1 at the near post, 2 in the middle but both skrtel and sakho were by the front post and cross just took them out he game.

Sakho is a brute of a guy himself. It's true that Gestede had everything in his favour, but the likes of a Hyypia or Carragher (let alone Lawrenson) would have done enough to stop him getting a clean header, for sure. Gestede is fearsome, but he's not in the same class as Hartson, Regis or Sharp, and good cb's usually got to stop them getting free headers.

I have to say I agree with @donga darko on this. Sakho should take some criticism for the 2nd goal, as good as it was, Sakho was still brushed aside like a piece of paper on Weymouth beach.

Still a great defender though, so it's hard to be too critical on him.

Not so sure, Gestede's got a few inches on Sakho and more importantly has the momentum to be meeting the ball with force. Don't think Sakho
could of done much more really

So if a cf is taller than the cb and has a run on him there's nothing the cb can do? My arse! You impede his run and jump at the same time and across him for a start. I played rb years ago and never let taller forwards (i was 5'9") get a free header. An elbow in the ribs does wonders too.

All depends on the individual situation, no two cases are the same. Sakho rarely loses out in the air,but Gestede did him more than once yesterday

I agree with what your saying. But top flight football is a differnt game, as a defender you have to be careful when dealing with any players close to the penalty area. Being more physical and standing ones ground is one thing. But a mistimed clumsy jump (let alone an elbow to the ribs) is all it takes for that whistle to blow.

That being said, although I wager being a centre back is a differnt skill than it was 5 years ago; we can defiantly find better examples of strong centre back play.

I don't think anyone's saying sakho was faultless for the goal, but sometimes you have to just say the cross and header were top class.

If your being critical then yes he could have done more to put him off, but was totally different from the first goal where you can see clear errors were made.

There's an element of mistake in every goal scored. Sometimes you just have to take your hat off to the opposition because it's a quality goal.

Yep, and if you're going to argue the Stoke result was "lucky" because Coutinho scored a worldie then you have to also say Rodgers was "unlucky" that Villa were even in the game

  16. I'm 5'8" and play CB on Sundays. Really do I win the header when up against big CFs but I never let my opponent have a free header. As Donga said, jump with jump and make it hard for them.

It's much easier to perform a defensive header (any contact is good) rather than a attacking header (a good contact is needed).

He went on a diet. The intention was to lose weight but he read the instructions sideways up and lost height.

What position do you play on other days of the week?

By the way, I believe you win the header against big CFs, you don't need to over stress it.
