I think Sakho is defending the line himself.

Considering how young the team was, that's a good result. Good to see Moreno and Sakho back in the team - hardly anything went down their side.

Rossiter and Chiri are the future.

    Well...threw a win away there..

Looked better in the first half of the second half.

Rossiter keeps progressing he's Lucas natural successor if we're not buying anyone in.

Sakho...Has to start next game and I'd have Gomez beside him..Could Clyne play as a three? Not going to happen any of it if course...

    Ings brought energy..play

Ibe...Well...keeps this type of lack of confidence or effort up I'll start calling him Glen.

Edit..actually good point Jimmy..4 with Moreno..still not going to happen lol..

Pity Sakho will get dropped against Norwich. Him and Gomez looked okay together and never gave the worries that Skerts and Lovren give all the time.

    Rossiter did well.

Shocker. I'll take news that surprises no one except Rodgers for 2000, Jimmy.

Chirivella played well, glad for the lad. Didn't get to see first half so can't comment much on anyone's performance there. Lallana didn't do anything second half except for the goal, which he took well. Coutinho playing alone, not a good sign. I noticed a moment when the ball came to us in our half, counter attack on - within the next 20 seconds of us getting the ball, ONE player was in their half. How on earth do you attack with that? Of course you won't score if you've got no one in attack.

Second half we had some tidy footwork but I felt that the players were all playing as if they were exhausted already. Worrying, disappointed in not winning, but individuals put in some good performances.

Also, Ibe today showed why we should have kept Markovic.

Fair result can't complain much. Young players did their part and they should get another run out in the league cup. A bit disappointed with Origi as he didn't put in a shift. Contrast that with Ings who contributed more in his little cameo.

On to Norwich and Sakho should have played himself into the first team with that performance.

Agreed - Lallana did have a brief 10-15 min period where he looked to play a lot quicker and it helped. But overall, really poor performance but he is coming back from injury and he took his goal very well. Won't be singing his praises but will cut him slack.

A lot assumed that Ibe would be Sterling's replacement which was insane because they are both two completely different players and styles, and Sterling was ahead in their development. Markovic was the natural replacement for Sterling and as you mentioned, we should have kept him.

We need Coutinho to play deeper - there is no link between midfield and attack at the moment, which often leads to the striker being left isolated. As you said, we simply don't have enough people supporting the attack and getting ahead of play. Lack of speed, intelligence or awareness?

Origi did put a shift in - he was just isolated.

Please please please persist with Sakho and Gomez as the CB pairing. So much potential.

Tactics. Clyne and Moreno offer us options going forward, but a single-striker system inherently requires wingers to hoof into the big lump in the middle. So with 5 players trying to bomb forward, everyone else has to stay back, including Coutinho, Can, and Milner/Henderson. While on paper this should be enough firepower, it rarely works. If the fullbacks don't beat their man, the wingers don't get the ball. If the wingers don't beat their man, the midfielders don't get the ball. If all this happens, the striker doesn't ever get the ball.

That's assuming there is a back four. With a back three, it's even worse as all the midfielders have to drop back even further to cover.

So the striker drops back deeper to pick up the ball, ends up tiring himself out, and no one attacks. It's a system that's never worked for Rodgers - we did the same with Downing in the first season if you recall. Double striker systems haven't been in style for a while - but when we did it, it was almost a revelation because opponents aren't used to marking two strikers (especially when the worse of the two they were marking was still an incredibly in-form Sturridge).

Rodgers however, is quick to think he is past that, it was a fad, he's smarter. But I truly believe that a formation of

    ------------------------------Mignolet-----------------------------
    ---Clyne--------Sakho----------------Gomez------Moreno--
    -------------------------------Can---------------------------------
    ---------------Henderson----------Coutinho------------------
    -----------------------------Firmino-------------------------------
    ---------------Sturridge---------------Benteke-----------------

Would work wonders. If we needed more steel in midfield, we could take Firmino out, move Coutinho up and fill that spot with Milner.

For the subs, We would have Ings and Origi, Lallana/Lucas, Skrtel/Lovren, Bogdan, and Ibe. Allen (who I do not rate at all) and Toure would be there for rotation.

    How doesn't Sakho start?

    #278
  19. By not joining in? <whistle>

Gomez needs to be playing CB imo. Let Moreno and CLyne provide the width from FB. Team I'd be playing with everyone fit...

    Migs
    Clyne - Gomez - Sakho - Moreno
    Lucas
    Hendo - - - Milner
    Coutinho
    Sturridge - Benteke
Feel harsh leaving Can out but he could compete with Lucas, Hendo and Milner and put them all under pressure to perform.

That team has attacking spunk. A go for it mentality, something we've been lacking since Luis left!

Would drop Sturridge for Firmino to give him a chance in his actual position plus Sturridge is still out but I like that formation.
