Funny, I have relatives still living in Withernsea & they are actually happy being in the East Riding. It is difficult to justify huge spending on a "resort" which is gradually eroding into the North Sea

Aye, what's ERYC doing about the problem of erosion? They've destroyed With beach with expensive boulders and tipped concrete at Mappleton. Blimey, people grumbling they have to cross the road to get to Humber St, but they're going to have to swim to Islands like Hornsea in a few years time. Talk about letting assets run through their fingers.

Most proposals that have put forward have been rejected by the government who seem happy to see much of the Holderness coast vanish

It looks like the massive amount of public opposition is going to lead to a revised proposal that doesn't involve filling it in. #PeoplePower

    Local politics and its peculiarities.
I was at an East Riding meeting, and the discussion was extended over one guy trying to get the timings on some temporary traffic lights changed, because he has to drive through them each morning.

To be fair, I think all council meetings are like this, there's as much time spent on petty bickering as there is on any actual council business.

You binned the idea of local council? I would think this type of bollocks would drive you mental.

After attending a council meeting, I definitely went off the idea, two of the Councillors spent almost the entire meeting personally attacking each other and they were both from the same party. <doh>

My experience from past jobs is that full council meetings achieve nothing in most local authorities, they are designed for grandstanding. It is committees and scrutiny where the real work gets done by councillors.

On discussion on Burnsy this morning they were asking people about their knowledge of Beverley Gate.
A disappointingly high proportion had little of no idea about it or its significance. Disappointing but not surprising given the way this country's history is marginalised in schools these days. I am sure that elsewhere in Europe people would know about such a place, not just locally but nationally.

My favourite was the woman who said " Yes, I know its significance. It is where they turned back the Parliamentarians and that is why we became known as Kingston Upon Hull".

These people make my blood boil ...you can imagine that they would not care if someone planned to flatten Stonehenge, or knock down York's City Walls....

It may only be a hole in the ground & a mess at the moment, but it was the birthplace of much of the world's Parliamentary democracy & it it's way a site of global historic interest.....perhaps it should even be listed as a World Heritage site

I agree. I've suggested a couple of times that it should maybe be raised to existing ground level and then protected somehow.

    Dutch, Fez.

    Pack it the **** in.

    Please.

Isn't there any community groups, historical society's etc, that could get a status of some form thrown on this? Listed, Heritage, Grade sommat, that sort of thing?

I think someone has applied for status on it. I was only listening in parts on the Radio this morning but the gist I got (could be completely wrong) was that a listed status of any sort could jeopardise the development works for COC 2017?

I would love to see a replica rebuilt either using the original foundations or alongside a glass covered foundations to show what was there & act as a true monument to the City's role in global democracy...& possibly as an entrance to the historic old town
