Just saw this article which claiming Phil Parkes as an old West Ham boy. Always thought he'd align himself with our great club ............. not the spammers. I know players played for various clubs and all that but at the end of the day, methinks a player chooses to align themselves with one club, ie: ....... as did Stanley Bowles with us. Has Parkes chosen them over us? I'm starting to think that maybe Phil Parkes was not as good a goalkeeper that I originally thought? Your thoughts ........................ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...6-prove-lucky-omens-attend-win-Newcastle.html
Parkes must have been paraded at loftus rd at some stage Some people will go anywhere for a free beer...even to west ham Did he ever have a sports shop there
It was for a very specific purpose - to celebrate the team of 1986. Doesn't matter which team you may support or are currently working for. Note that he played exactly the same number of games for both teams ... 344.
One of the few players to be regarded by two clubs as being one of their greats. Mainly, because he was! I think both clubs & supporters realise that he has an affinity to both. I've read quotes from him that he still has nightmares about that game on Easter Saturday 1976!
I still remember Parksy's, the sports shop on the Uxbridge Road around the corner from Loftus Road, which was either named in his honour or he had some kind of stake in. Either way though I'd say that it was enough to claim him in our favour..
My favourite QPR keeper was Juergen Sommer. We used to bet on how many times he would drop the ball during the game and the loser had to buy the beers in the White Horse afterwards.
Hero for both clubs. Back in late 70's my dad took me to a pre-season open day at the clubs training ground, I would've been about 8 or 9, and I scored a penalty against him - he probably let it go in, but I've never forgotten it!
Finest goalkeeper we ever had and probably one of West Hams as well......think I read somewhere that he is an ambassador for West Ham......still always welcome at HQ......
Thanks for the replyies, l wasn't quite sure how games Parkes played for the Hammers so being the totals were much the same, I'm happy to share him ..... Well, maybe.
I can still picture most of that match in my mind! Certainly all three of their goals! Nowt that Phil could have done about them but boy did they hurt! I was not a happy bunny that day!
A great goalkeeper and one of my heros. It is just a pity that he did not win more than only one England cap as he was the third choice with with Peter Shilton (125 caps) and Ray Clemence (61 caps) fighting for the England first team appearance. Also in that era, Pat Jennings was a truely wonderfull keeper for Spurs and Northern Ireland. What has happedened to great British goalkeepers of late. Once in abundence, and now in rare supply.
