Watmore, 21, has been studying for the degree at Newcastle University while coming through Sunderland’s academy. Last season, he won the Under 21 Premier League Player of the Year award. He was revising for exams while playing for England Under 20s in the Toulon Tournament this summer. The University allowed him to postpone his final two exams due to the tournament, which he then completed in July. please log in to view this image +4 Watmore concentrates on his studies at England's team headquarters in Bandol during the Toulon Tournament please log in to view this image The Sunderland forward studies for a first-class honours degree in economics and business management Watmore took his studies wherever he has played, starting at Manchester University while playing for non-League Altrincham — where he was nicknamed the ‘Ginger Messi’ by fans for his performances — switching to Newcastle when he was picked up by Sunderland and his books travelled with him to Edinburgh Library when he went on loan to Hibernian last year. Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat described Watmore as a ‘natural goalscorer’ at the end of last season and has handed him a chance this campaign. He has produced two goals in three matches. It earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s recent England Under 21 side, where he set up James Wilson on his debut for the winner against USA Under 23s. After picking up his results, Watmore will return straight back to training with Sunderland and hopes to be in contention to face Tottenham on Sunday. please log in to view this image
That's fantastic. Hats off to the lad How often do you see a lad with his talent and reputation etc etc going about with the ego and behaving like a cock He's clearly a very level headed, talented and driven young man I look forward to the future with him on our books
I really, really, really want this lad to do well. He seems like a really top bloke, nice guy and hard working. I think most footballers nowdays come across as lazy, arrogant ****s honestly, so good to have a lad like Duncan in our ranks bucking the trend.
I was just thinking that. Economics and business management eh? Ellis could give him a job on the board. He`s better qualified already than that ****ing shower we`ve got now.
The lad clearly has a mature head on his shoulders. His mum and dad must be so proud! Congratulations to both him and his parents!
An intelligent footballer! How often do you see that? I really like this lad, maybe he's rational enough to bide his time. It's been a concern of mine that he might go somewhere else if he doesn't start getting game time.
Wow! I wish this lad nothing but the best. Fair play lad, you deserve every success for grafting your bollocks off.
Any chance his progress and integration into the first team was put on hold while he was completing his final year? Seems a striking coincidence that he finishes and gets straight into the fold.
