I think you will need a proven goalscorer aswell.

defoe isnt the player we need, he doesnt work hard enough and play when he feels like it it seems.

we need someone like sturridge, milevski or another powerfull quick goalscorer, not a out and out speedster

I'm not saying you do need defo just someone like him ( natural goalscorer)

<ok> TBH i'd take Defoe depending on the price. A quick, natural finishers what we need, someone exactly like Gamiero:angry:

We need more than a natural goalscorer. Best and Ba both seem to fill that role well. We need a striker to base our main game around (or someone that fits the plans we already have). Of course they need to be able to score in that system as well

"prem experience" definitely isn't a must-have quality of whoever gets brought in...especially when you look at how UNprolific the strikers in the premier league were last season

Was in a bar in Annapolis USA for this game... was amusing to see everyone go crazy twice thinking they had won it only for Japan to come back and then beat them on pens...oh well. At least they learnt the crucial international rule. If it goes to penalties...you're ****ed.

In response to the OP I'm with the Geordies on this one. The two most experienced and "established" players SAFC have acquired are O'Shea and Brown. Two players that when heavily relied upon, never seem to cut the mustard. They were ok as back up from time to time, and O'Shea was a solid utility player in his earlier years however....O'Shea fancies himself as an attacking fullback...WRONG JOHNNY BOY...never has there been such an inept Man Utd attacking fullback, he couldn't cross for ****, and when his cross did hit the first defender he had absolutely no legs to get back at the opposition winger who was 40-odd yards down the pitch already. Fergie trusted an untried Raphael and an untried Fabio over O'Shea. I'm glad to see the back of both Brown and O'Shea because neither have ever been the quality that wins trophies at the top level. Smalling is better than both...put together...already.

On to Gardner, tough one, has a decent strike on him but he's not going to produce that kind of season again I don't think. 8 PL goals last season is a fairly decent return. Disappeared too many times though. Larsson....he is just very very average when all Premier League wingers are taken into account. Connor Wickham....could be the buy of the decade or could turn out to be a complete flop. I remember so many strikers who can smash 20+ per season in the championship but zero in the prem, he couldn't manage many in the championship so let's see. Let's face it, your acquisition from the far-east is going to be a squad player at best so no need to waste time.

Now on the other hand, Cabaye is one of the most underrated players in France, he was the engine behind Lille's success - he is proven, at International level. Ben Arfa is like a new signing, from what I read he's looking sharp, should be and could be playing for a top 4 side, always fancied him at OT if he could prove his attitude has changed. Ba - proven, how isn't he? Marveaux, not seen much of him, no further comment. The bottom line is NUFC didn't need to make 24 signings like Bruce did. The don't need an overhaul.

SAFC fans, ask yourself this...when was the last time you seen a team take such a dramatic change over the summer in terms of players and then hit the ground running? Most of your starting 11 vs the scum at Anfield on day 1 will have never played together competitively, you then take on your arch rivals who are more than capable of ripping you apart. 2 losses from 2 at the beginning of the season can very soon snowball into 8/9 on the spin and in O'Shea and Brown you've got 2 defenders who don't know how to much in when the going gets tough because they've never had to.

Pretty objective and accurate stuff. As I have said plenty of times, I think Brown and O'Shea are decent signings no more. Ferguson has a canny knack of getting rid of players at the right time, after hes bled every last ounce of ability out of them. How many players have left Man U and gone on to do well? There are a couple like Stam (he admitted that one), but in the main they've got little left to offer. O'Shea still managed to get plenty games because of his versatility but Brown played very little of late. This is mainly due to injuries but also because he can be error prone. He had that one spell about 4 seasons ago where he made a lot of appearances at right back and to be fair he did quite well. But over the last three seasons he'll be lucky if he's averaged 20 games a season in a team that plays probably 60 games a year. Gardner for me is very average, Larrsson the same. I think instead of the fee for Gardner, along with the wages for him, Larrson and Vaughan, they should have been invested in one quality midfielder to play alongisde Cattermole. I like the signing of Wickham I must admit. I think he'll be a good investment.

In general I'm happy with our work so far. Obviously we desperately need a striker. We don't want to be relying on Ba with that dicky knee of his. I like the technical players we've brought on board as I think we all felt we gave the ball away a little too much at times. There are those who wish us to sign about 10 players but I much prefer this steady progression and evolution of the team and our style of play. We could do with a back up left back of course. (probably a first choice when Jose goes) I just hope its not Wayne Bridge who is a defensive liability. Long term Danny Simpson needs to improve or we'll have to look at right back.

All in all I feel we're in better shape than Sunderland. They may have the numbers but I feel we have greater quality in our ranks. Our main concern is the fitness of Gosling, Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Ba. If they all have problems we could be left short.

Let's be honest now, this is utter bollocks, he is slower then he used to be and he never was the fastest in the league. Still quick but no where near as quick as you are making out here <laugh>

  18. Ok, which striker(s) in the PL are faster than Loven? Lover getting caught offside or mistiming his runs are his failing at times, but he's still extremely fast.

Rooney? No. Hernandez? No. Suarez? No. Drogba? no. Torres? No. Van Persie? No. All these players are far better than Lover but not as quick. <ok>

There are faster players in the PL than lover but no faster strikers.

In that case lets sign Usain Bolt as his direct replacement.

I reckon Hernandez would be quicker than Lover over 25 yards. Odemwingie will be too. Van Persie possibly nowadays but he'd break down after the first 5 yards. Agbonlahor certainly. Vela possibly. Torres if he was fit. I wouldn't underestimate how much Lover has slowed.
