Quite right, Stan, thanks for the correction. They look similar on first view, but the Mujahadeen were as you say warlords involved in looting and pillaging, and the Taleban seem to be motivated more by strict interpretations of the Koran. All ruthless jihadis.

1950s/60s -
Let the darkies, dagos, brownies, paddies in to do as much of the crap jobs as we had.
They behaved so we put up with them - but we didn't really like them.

The rest of the brownies and the chinkies, oh and a few more brownies from Uganda to do the remaining crap.
They behaved very well, but not as integrated as the first lot - we put up with them but we didn't really like them.
1980s -
Started going a bit Pete Tong - Brixton riots, Tottenham - seemed as though the third generation really didn't like the "free massages" on offer from the Poulis. I also remember the delightful times of waiting for my Daddy to pick me up outside the Spanish school in Portobello Road and regularly massaged by the Poulis. - Lovely.
1990s -
The Immigrant revolution begins! - The "dodgy immigrants" from Eastern Europe, Middle East & East Africa start coming in, they don't need to wait a few generations to start kicking off - we really didn't like them.
2000/10s -
The majority of 50s/60s are long gone to rest or are now a burden in old age. The "dodgy immigrants" have now transformed into the "Apocalypse" - we are desperate to close the borders, we have no use for them and all they want to do is kill us and our British values.
So what are those British values?
Is it cricket on the village lawn?
Tea and scones?
Jimmy Tarbuck, Bruce Forsyth or Nicholas Parsons?
Is it the BBC or ITV?
Leaving your door on the latch?
Or Roast Beef down the hatch?

In truth, you know full well Stan that the answer you are searching for is non-existent. There was a fairy tale story of how accommodating the Brits were and are, how our morals are somehow way above everyone else. We easily mock those buffoon Johnny foreigners who carnt even speek or spel Engerlish yet we can barely muster a tak, merci, gracias ourselves let alone a thank you!!
Our British values in truth were the same as everyone - whilst it is in our favour we'll go with it, as soon as it becomes difficult I want out.
But then I find myself in total hypocrisy in love with a country that to all intents and purposes reminds me of England growing up - it was never perfect, but we chose all of us to get on with it. Things just seemed so much fairer in those days, the inequality that we see today amongst our own peers is now so great that we somehow need to attack something or someone that can provide us with a semblance of reasoning to the madness.
Today, there is no truth to everyone in Britain having an equal chance, in fact that is true of ALL countries, it just seems that in Britain, that has widened even further than all its peers.
Where did it go wrong? - I'm sorry, look no further than the Thatcher/Reagan years which I'm ashamed to say - I also lapped up.

As to Danish's comments about social mobility, it seems to me it's mostly to do with the standards in state education. It seems to have taken a dip. Quality of teaching varies, class discipline is sometimes too lax and too many kids come out with inadequate numeracy and literacy skills. Compare with private schools that pretty much apply the same standards that were in force in the 1950's. Grammar schools weren't perfect because they could allocate to a child second tier education at the age of 11, with no chance of remedy if the child was a late developer, but for those that went, grammar schools delivered a first class education (I trust Stan will agree). It's a shame they couldn't be perfected to accomodate late developers.

I recall my London raised father talking about this period and indicating how the "nice" neighbourhoods of his boyhood in West Kilburn went steadily downhill after being populated with new immigrants.

The ship MV Empire Windrush brought the first group of 492 immigrants to Tilburynear London on 22 June 1948.[22] The Windrush was en route from Australia to England via the Atlantic, docking in Kingston, Jamaica in order to pick up servicemen who were on leave.[23] An advertisement had appeared in a Jamaican newspaper offering cheap transport on the ship for anybody who wanted to come and work in the UK. There was plenty of work in post-war Britain and industries such as British Rail, the National Health Service and public transport recruited almost exclusively from Jamaica and Barbados.[24] Though Afro-Caribbean people were encouraged to journey to Britain via immigration campaigns created by successive British governments, many new arrivals were to endure prejudice, intolerance and extreme racism from sectors of White British society.[22] This experience was to mark African-Caribbean people's relations with the wider community over a long period.[25] Early African-Caribbean immigrants found private employment and housing denied to them on the basis of race. Trade unions would often not help African-Caribbean workers and some pubs, clubs, dance halls and churches would bar black people from entering.[22] Housing was in short supply following the wartime bombing, and the shortage led to some of the first clashes with the established white community.
Clashes continued and worsened into the 1950s, and riots erupted in cities including London, Birmingham and Nottingham.[19] In 1958, attacks in the London area of Notting Hill by white youths marred relations with West Indian residents, leading to the creation of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, which was initiated in 1959 as a positive response by the Caribbean community.[26] Some of the racism and intolerance was stoked by explicitly fascist or anti-immigration movements including Oswald Mosley's Union Movement, the League of Empire Loyalists, the White Defence League, the National Labour Party and others. Influenced by this kind of propaganda, gangs of Teddy Boys would often attack blacks in London.[22] Historian Winston James argues that the experience of racism in Britain was a major factor in the development of a shared Caribbean identity amongst immigrants from a range of different island and class backgrounds. The shared experience of employment by organisations such as London Transport and the National Health Service also played a role in the building of a British African-Caribbean identity.[27]

Kilburn's post and your reference to Kilburn reminded me that I used to spend many a Saturday morning playing school football in the early/mid seventies being crushed by teams of giant West Indian lads from Willesden, Kilburn and Alperton. In the mid nineties my Dad (a mass of contradictions, old school labour entrepreneur from Walthamstow) declined to lend me a few grand towards a deposit on a house in Kilburn, entirely because of his perception that it was a dodgy area (compared to Walthamstow ffs). He coughed up for a place in Teddington though. Of course the period place in Kilburn would now be worth well over a million, whilst the Teddington new build is struggling at £900k.
And there you have 'traditional British values' - 'is my house worth more than the mountain of debt I racked up to buy it and will it pay for my retirement?' Democracy, respect, law, tolerance? **** that, don't do anything to damage the value of my hutch!
