Apparently Duncan Ferguson was asked to help out with the launch of an appeal to raise £250,000 to buy special coaches for a children's hospital so that the kids could be taken out for days. These are seriously ill/handicapped kids. He duly turned up as asked and gave his time to help the cause.....then the next day he sent them a cheque for £250,000.

must have been from his testimonial fund.

    good on him.

A really really good cause that.

A few have had charitable foundations and have had such testimonials which filled the coffers to help quite a bit like our two but props to big dunc for doing this.

Top man is Duncan, when he came back a few years back for a visit and was introduced onto the pitch at HT, he simply couldn't cope with the reception he got, and was nearly in tears. He's been part of the club ever since.

Loads of footballers do this (and celebs) just don't hear about it a lot because good news stories don't sell.

    Noce touch <ok>

the cynic in me says that bid dunc grew up and had it hard like the rest of us and stories were of hard times as i recall. esp at rangers

I think the youth of today really don't sound like they grow up in that any more and someone like rah££m even though he did stuff in jamaicia get called just pure ****es as a result. the average kid by the time they are 20 in the prem is on 10k per week so do they really know what the real world is like?

Craig Bellamy you normally only hear about when he's doing something controversial but he gives a buttload to charity.

He's paid for a school built in Sierra Leone and goes there to coach the able and disabled kids. There's a lot of players giving back in the form of charitable foundations and it's good to hear.

it does seems a type of thing where some or at least some we know understand how lucky they are and try to pay it back/forward etc.

I remember reading that Ozil donated his WC earnings [about £230,000] to Brazil for the betterment of Brazilian children's healthcare [?] Kuyt, Messi, Ronaldo, Drogba all have foundations. There's been talk of Balotelli giving out money on the streets - which has largely been dismissed as urban myth - but there's also stories of him donating half of all his earnings to charities.

The kind of money these guys are now amassing (and I'm not referring to Duncan here as he was from another era financially) they're at the level of the super rich. With large amounts of money comes a responsibility to put something back imo (don't forget it's all tax deductible btw, lol)

I bet she does. We know what teachers get up to these days. I wonder if he lives up to being the son of "big dunk".

Sure it's tax deductible but it takes a bit of effort and time to actually do it.

Dont want to sound too cynical here but £250,000 is a huge amount of money for somebody to donate in one go, it just sounds a bit too much to me although i have got no idea how much is he worth.

Either way its not surprising to me to hear about footballers etc involved in good causes, I have seen plenty of it over the years.

  17. I was thinking similar. Modern day footballers can donate that sort of figure without battering a eye lid but Big Dunc was twenty years ago and although the money was good, I wouldn't imagine he has spare £250k's about the house to just give away. As far as I am aware, he's not done that much since retiring so that is probably a massive amount for him! Fair play to him if true though <applause>

On other players etc doing charity work, there are hundreds in this country alone. A lot set up or financially support charities but being an ambassador is just as thoughtful. Having a famous name associated to the cause can generate more than the donation they may give,

We don't tend to hear about these things though because players prefer to keep it quiet in fear of a backlash. anyone seen doing something positive like this must be doing it for a reason and it is some sort of PR stunt. Its the society we live in unfortunately thanks to social media etc.

Maybe Ferguson invested well when he was playing, its a considerable sum to be shedding out. Good on him anyway <applause>

We gave him a testimonial in pre season, so I imagine the cash came from that <ok>

He's a member of The Fur & Feather pidgeon club by us and has friends on the Cantril Farm housing estate and drinks in the pubs around the area, he's done that since he was a player, pity that more players from our local clubs don't mix with the local community.
