I really don't see the problem here, they have to ask for written confirmation of a disability as a universal policy because some you cant tell by looking. Then the person must be there or they could be using the disabled person to get cheap tickets and queue jump.

At one of my local supermarkets there are ordinary bays closer to the entrance than the disabled ones. Yet some ****s still park in the disabled bays without a badge. A large proportion of them large 4x4s or those ludicrous extended ones favoured by builders. Presumably an inability to be competent enough to park these things in an ordinary sized bays compels them to use the wider disabled bays. One can only hope that one day they or one of their family will be disabled and they find no disabled bays available.

A few years back now, I was involved with a team enforcing tax disc fraud, where offending vehicles were being crushed. Checking over one vehicle, and a guy pokes his head out of the window of a nearby flat and shouts down 'what are you ****s up to' so it was explained and he was asked if he wanted to get his personal stuff out before it's cubed. There was a fair amount, including kiddy seats, toys etc. 'Nah, just take it' he says, before closing the curtain and presumably going back to bed!

For someone I knew, it was a picture of Ken Dodd. His argument was if he doesn't pay, neither should I.

You were enforcing tax disc fraud? Did that entail going around making people replace legitimate tax discs with fraudulent ones?

They were asked to bring written proof of the disability and did, they were then asked for the person to come in so they look at them to make sure they were down syndrome. What if the disability was not one you could see? If they were blind, would they make them walk around the car park until they crashed into something to prove it? What about deaf people, how would they prove they were deaf?

I appreciate that a lot of people try and cheat the system and this is largely what causes these issues, but many disabilities are not visible and it strikes me as being a poor system to use, particularly for a business like Flamingo Land, who could really do without the bad press.

If you're going to be pedantic, the answer there is clearly, no, I wasn't enforcing tax disc fraud <doh>:emoticon-0138-think:emoticon-0113-sleep

Whilst we're on the subject of tax discs, does anyone know how the DD payments work with the new system? Last time they took about 4 weeks before taking a payment. I think mine is due now but there's no way to check. How will I know when they'll be taking it?

I don't think they wanted to see the person to make sure it was Down's syndrome, the documents would have been enough proof of that. More likely they wanted to make sure the person they were claiming was disabled was actually there using the disabled ticket.

It doesn't make sense that Flamingo Land wanted to see whether they had a disability but it would make sense to ask the person to present themselves with the documentary proof and proof of ID so that Flamingo Land were sure that the disabled person was the person using the cheap passes. If there was no photograph on the passes I suppose the passes could be passed to other people unless there were other checks!

Who was being pedantic? I was merely quoting what you wrote. Obviously what you wrote wasn't an accurate description of what you were doing. Which was enforcing tax disc compliance. Maybe you should have written that.

Accusing others of being pedantic when they correctly point out something is wrong is just a diversionary tactic. Made even more pathetic by the hand on head emoticon.

I got the impression they wanted to see them to make sure they were there. The paperwork proved the disability, but included a photograph. It reads to me that it was the identity, not the disability they were checking.

It's why I asked what the normal procedure is at other places, as I can't believe others don't check too, and dad hasn't gone through this before.

If it is a disability that you can't see I would assume they would have to take some form of photo ID to prove that they are the person that the written proof says they are. Obviously in this case they can tell by looking, but how can they look if she isn't there to see? I would certainly think this is suspicious and is probably exactly how people try to cheat the system.

Where I work we have to be very careful about who comes into our office and what they ask to take away, we require photo ID and have to see them before we can release anything.

    Flamigo Land disabled concessions...

Guests who provide valid proof of disability can purchase a discounted entry ticket for themselves and one carer. Department for Work & Pensions and Disability Living Allowance letters will only be accepted if accompanied by photographic proof of identity.

Carers must be of sufficient age and fitness to provide the level of support required. For everyone’s safety, all lifting of a disabled guest will be the responsibility of their carer.

Guests with disabilities which prevent them from using the normal queue lines may be eligible for a Direct Access wristband. Again, documentary proof of disability is mandatory and Department for Work & Pensions or Disability Living Allowance letters will only be accepted if accompanied by photographic proof of identity. Wristbands are issued from our First Aid Centre, featuring the international wheelchair symbol for disabled guests and a hand symbol to identify carers. Flamingo Land’s management may also issue an additional carer wristband if they believe this to be necessary.

Direct Access wristbands allow disabled guests and carers to enter the majority of rides and attractions via the ride exit gates. Carers must ride with disabled guests at all times to assist in the event of an evacuation. Please note that carers are expected to perform all lifting assistance.

Carers will not be allowed entry to rides or attractions via the exit gate unless accompanied by a disabled guest.

DMD who constantly tells others what in his opinion they really meant, reinterprets others' posts to fit his own agenda, doesn't like being told he expressed himself badly and has a hissy fit and by with that reply concedes defeat.
