...was apparently striped, rather than plain white (from October 1904)....

This book is the definitive record of our first few years and is incredibly detailed and illustrated throughout by these types of newspaper cartoons.

I remember seeing a photo of a shirt someone had found in their attic in Hull a few years a go. I'm sure it was on here or maybe BBC606. It was black and amber hoops and it was suggested that it was probably used before 1904. Anyone have any details on this?

It was this photo from 1904 that led to the suggestion that we'd started off in white shirts/black shorts, but it was apparently always the intention the have an amber and black striped kit...

Aye, I've seen something similar. There was an argument I was reading, I forget where now, that was pointing out the black and white 1st kit claim was most likely an error.

I think it was suggested that it was a Hull Town top before 1904. It was a colour photo of a black and amber hooped top.

Apparently it's not even City in the photo.

It is City in that photo, we also played a game in an all black kit around the same time...

Though it's unclear exactly what games were played in these kits and why, it is known for certain that we played our first league game in amber and black stripes.

There was a discussion some time ago on CI about it. EGD posted a movie clip which is thought to be from City's first game against Notts County which shows two teams in stripes. There is a photo taken before the game with both sides on with City in the kit above. It was suggested it was because in those days the black and white photography wouldn't pick up the differences too well.

Is "Jimmy" in that cartoon a defender on the post or a very confident goalkeeper who doesn't need to stand in the centre of his goal

Is he available as a loan?

He's the keeper, they didn't have keeper kits back then, everyone wore the same kit.

That's true, keepers not required to wear a different kit until 1909.

They'd have been too late for a Saturday afternoon 15:00 kick off.

Look very carefully, they are both in stripes. Admittedly it is only possible to make it out from certain parts as it is not very distinct.

So they are, though if that dark kit is City's, we started off with a hell of a dark amber.
