That sounds a great course. Did you do a year in the States on that one? Ye read loads of Elmore Leonards. Read Crumley too. I will look out for Hillerman and Burke. Couldnt get into Easy Rawlins. I've read a couple of Cormac Mcarthys too, pretty good. The Harry Bosch novels are brilliant apart from the last one 9 dragons, Joseph Wambauigh are great reads also.
Forgot the Harry Bosch books... My degree was only 3 years. After I started, they made it 4-year, with a year in the U.S. My bad luck. Love Cormac Mac.... Not thrillers, but try Thomas McGuane.
Just finishing shantaram by gregory david roberts.its the best book ive ever read and i read alot.rumour has it russel crowe and johnny depp paying their own money to star in the film!.
You're right, Impy, downloaded it on iPlayer, and watched two parts so far...... Hey - Ayn Rand, in the first part.....she's SO WEIRD! - never blinks!!!
Just Finished "King of the Gypsies" about Bartley Gormon a legend, in traveling circles who was a bare knuckle fighter, very good read.
I have recently read, "The forgotten highlander" excellent book about a young jock that gets taken prisoner by the Japs in Singapore and used as a slave on the jungle railway ie: Bridge over the river Kwai etc, Very good true story. Also Maurice Micklewhites ( Michael Caine ) autobiography, Interesting and reasonably funny. And last but not least "Chopins Funeral" Very interesting especially if your a pianist ( which I'm not ) A true genius.
"White Rabbit" - the story of F.F.E. Yeo-Thomas - parachuted into France, in order to organize the Resistance to be ready for D-Day. Hunted by the Gestapo, betrayed and captured. Sent to Buchenwald, escaped and made it back to Ehgland. Stunning stuff, as he was some kind of amazing geezer.
This post piqued my interest so I utilised the services of Amazon. Apparently, it is a second rate horror novel (according to the reviews at any rate); I do not get the whole horror genre.
I would recommend any book by Jack Higgins also the 2 city books written by Gary Clark - From Boothferry to Wembley & This is the best trip.......
Am quite an avid book reader and read at least 3 a week and also listen to talking books. Have read several mentioned on the thread and my current one I can recommend is " The Windup Girl" by Paolo Bacigalupi ( no smart comments please!). The story covers imperialism, sex and love, genetic engineering, greed and mysticism. Also since I visited the Whale museum in Hull last year have read a few of the Valerie Wood books some of which are set in Hull in the nineteenth century. "The Hungry Tide","Children of the Tide" are good reading and i believe both are available in talk. Thanks for the thread.
I'm a reader of history rather than novels. I'm in the middle of a book on George Custer at present and I've already bought my holiday reading (Seven Pillars of Wisdom and two Beevor books: Berlin and Stalingrad.)
I really liked them too (and just heard a rumour that Larsson planned a 10-book series!) Have you tried Jo Nesbo? He writes dark thrillers set in Norway. Or Henning Mankell's Inspector Wallander books (Swedish)?
I just watched the final part on DVD last night. The kid in Blockbuster bored me to death about the new American version out soon. Daniel Craig stars, dunno who the girl will be played by but she will have to be good to top her in the Swedish version.
The BBC 'Wallander' series, starring Kenneth Branagh, is pretty good. Filmed in Sweden and very atmospheric. Have you seen?
