Best Driver: Hamilton, he had the race in his pocket from Kemmel onwards, despite his team-mate sNicoing his way closer during the VSC, put in a gap and maintained it. Worst Driver: Lotus are blaming Maldo, so I'll go with that, although this hasn't registered it http://hasmaldonadocrashedtoday.com/ Best Rookie: Mad Max Best Team: Merc Worst Team: Pirelli, subsequent information changes my stance slightly on Vetttel's 'outburst'. Best Overtake: Max around the outside at Blanchmont and into the bus stop Most Surprising Result: Grosjean Least Surprising Result: 1 & 2 Funniest moment: has to be Williams tyre strategy Special Mention: Grosjean had a good drive, though I think Vettel would've held him off without the tyre, Vettel for trying something different and almost making it work, Ricciardo was a bit unlucky. Kvyatt had a decent Sunday, shame he didn't Q better and, of course, Max I would've had him as DoD if he hadn't got greedy overtaking Kimi and thought about Massa as well. Also Alonso, for being one of only 6 drivers to do a sub 1.54 lap. Race Rating: 7/10 I had a feeling Spa wouldn't be quite what it usually is, Canada wasn't and neither was Hungary. N.B. I am proposing a new category and ask that everyone casts a vote in the poll above. Ignore it or tell me it's a daft idea if you prefer (or better still, suggest something different in your post), but I'm hoping to encourage readership as well as contributions over the long term. Many thanks. Bullshit excuse of the week.
Best Driver: Perez, Grosjean. Perez should have led the first lap but corner cutting made him not, then defending great to come 5th in a pretty average car. Also leads Hulk in the championship. Grosjean for a great podium from 9th on the grid. Worst Driver: Bottas. For someone who was in the Ferrari a few weeks ago according to most people, he was dire. Not his fault he had the penalty but finishing 9th from 3rd on the grid is absolutely terrible considering how many drivers who can score points retired. Best Rookie: Sainz, had Verstappen all weekend but YET AGAIN screwed over by reliability. Best Team: Lotus minus the blaming Maldonado part. Worst Team: Williams. This should have suited their car and failed to capitalise again. Best Overtake: There wasn't any done on track so none. Most Surprising Result: Perez having the pace on Hulk all weekend? Nothing really surprised me. Least Surprising Result: Williams having the worst strategists and team ever. Sainz being screwed over by reliability. Funniest moment: Nothing. Special Mention: Mclaren's drivers. Too much bullshit to put up with! Race Rating: 2/10
Thanks Miggs; that could be fun. I was hoping to be able to edit the poll so as to add future suggestions but I'm unable. Anyway, I'm sure other responses will guide us. [Edit: I've just amazed myself in being able to do it!]
Hamilton hopping the kerb actually slowed him down as he took way too much, far more than what most then did for the rest of the race when going all four wheels off which didn't seem to make a difference. If he had not done that he would have had a cleaner exit so Perez would not have been anywhere near him. Look again the first lap, Hamilton has to correct after going over the kerb and loses some speed, before then he had a decent gap already to Perez.
Best Driver: Hamilton & Grosjean. Hamilton had quali and the race in his pocket, Grosjean with a cracking drive up to 3rd, I think he would have got Seb with the different state of their tyres. Worst Driver: Maldonado. Crash in FP1, sealed his own fate in the race by forgetting to turn into Eau Rouge. What a plank. Best Rookie: Max. Some gutsy moves, but there is a fine line between a ballsy overtake and a big accident. He got away with it. Best Team: Merc. No other team ran two decent cars all weekend. Worst Team: McLaren. So much hope, so little delivered. Best Overtake: Max at Blanchimont. Most Surprising Result: Lotus had speed and reliability Least Surprising Result: McLaren flattering to deceive Funniest moment: Williams managing to make their normal screw ups seem minor compared to putting on the wrong tyres Special Mention: Family and friends of Justin Wilson and the motorsport world at large for its loss. Also seemingly unnoticed the day before went the passing of Guy Ligier, a passionate racing man from the old skool variety. Race Rating: 7/10. Decent entertainment through most of the field. They all gave it a good go.
I think both Cosi and Miggs suggestions for extra awards are good. Has the ability to recognize a thoughtful or humorous contribution and may make us pay some more attention to the board! Bit like old 606 POTW and POTY. Ah, memories.
Best Driver: Grosjean for out of the blue, and Hamilton for a Saturday and Sunday domination Worst Driver: Maldonado, for ever shown up by his fp1 missing team mate Best Rookie: MaxV Best Team: Mercedes Worst Team: McLaren, so much promise but yet zero return. Best Overtake: MaxV, you know where Most Surprising Result: Grosjean Least Surprising Result: McLaren Funniest moment: EJ thinking the Lotus was Renault powered Special Mention: Perez put in a good showing Race Rating: 7/10 - If you look past everyones least favourite victor
Good idea for extra awards! Best Driver: Grosjean by far was the best. If he had a works mercedes im sure he would do better than the runt in #6 Worst Driver: Maldonado who I believe crashed into that curb so the website should be updated in my opinion. Best Rookie: Max was audacious Best Team: Lotus & sauber. They upped there game. Worst Team: McLaren though probably the worst track to suit them. Best Overtake: Max around the outside! around the outside? around the outside! Most Surprising Result: Only one driver got warned for track limits Least Surprising Result: Vettels tyre exploding, it was obvious Funniest moment: Bottas and his odd socks Special Mention: Force India. They also upped there game. Race Rating: 6.5/10 still no contest for win
Best Driver: Hamilton. He struggled with set-up on Friday but once sorted, he was unassailable. I'd suggest the Mercedes is not the easiest to launch from the grid but for once, he made perhaps the best start of anyone and quickly pulled out a gap to stay out of DRS range. After that, he settled on doing exactly what was necessary. Worst Driver: Maldonado. Practice does not mean 'practice crashing'. In any case, he doesn't need it. Best Rookie: Verstappen. No hesitation. So long as he avoids serious injury, he's a future World Champion. Best Team: Mercedes. None of the characteristic strategic errors this time. Worst Team: McLaren. After Arai-san's comments in the weeks leading up to the race, the lack of improvement is a complete embarrassment – not least to two of the best drivers out there… Best Overtake: Verstappen. Passing around the outside through Blanchimont to pull off a competitive overtake in the modern era – when cars are very closely matched compared to yester-year – is likely to be the overtake of the season. Most Surprising Result: Grosjean and Lotus. Now all they need is another decent driver… Least Surprising Result: Maldonado not up to the proper standard of F1. Funniest moment: Williams mis-matched tyres was not funny for the team; but I believe this is the first occasion it has ever happened. Bottas didn't seem to notice. With a clockwise circuit it was probably better that it was the right rear rather than the left. Special Mention: Perez was quite impressive. I'd also like to mention Justin Wilson, killed in the closing stages of the IndyCar race at Pocono. The debris he hit was unusual, random and completely unavoidable. This kind and loving gentle giant had no chance… Race Rating: 6.85/10 - - -o0o- - - P.S. I'd like to thank everyone who has so far voted in the poll.
going between the lines like he's supposed to would've made his exit far worse and would've cost him a lot more, I took exception to it at the time but by the 4th lap I think pretty much everyone had done it. Surprised no one came over the radio to complain, I guess that's what happens when Alonso is at the back.
Yeah, true about drivers not having a moan about others crossing the lines. They are born hypocrites so the fact they were all doing it is of no relevance when they want to complain about someone else! Can't recall it ever being that bad. Had they reprofiled the top of Eau Rouge since last year?
not sure if they did anything other than put in a 'sausage' to stop it happening, the drivers complained it was dangerous (a fair point IMO, hitting one at 180+ could cause a Webber special), it's possible it was reprofiled to put the sausage in, but drivers will take any advantage they can get I'm sure you've probably raced on-line so you know how it is at the top of eau rouge/Raidillon, you don't lift if you wanna get to the end of Kemmel without people blasting past.
