Me and 3 of the lads were in the Jackie Milburn Stand (couldn't get tickets for the lads end) right amongst the toon animals. The atmosphere was electric and sparky to say the least. They picked us out straight away when we didn't join in the moronic craa chanting and the hatred was intense but a couple of young coppers were standing only about 10 feet away and we agreed if they ****ed off so would we. Lol We sat out the whole game including the laughable pitch invasion. They were chanting "get it abandoned" all over but thankfully George Courtney had other plans that night (ever hear Gatesy talk about what the ref said in the tunnel?) and the most significant derby game in history was won by the red & whites. Marvellous. I remember we legged it pretty sharply after the final whistle and we were walking down behind the Gallowgate when this bloke all decked out in his toon garb, scarves hanging from both wrists like a Christmas tree, turned to me and said (thinking I was a craa) "you have to agree marra, they were better than us tonight, weren't they" to which I hurriedly agreed "Aye your right mate. Sunderland were much better". Magic memories.
i was there, the best feeling i've ever had in football, i remember 2 lads fighting on the train going there because 1 of them had a celtic top on, i missed the 1st couple of mins and when i finally got in within seconds mark mcgee hit the post. But after that we totally dominated the game and thoroughly deserved our win, the pitch invasion just topped the night off and summed nufc fans up to a tee, thick as ****, trying to get a game stopped with 3 mins to go haha
I was there too, with my daughter, sat amongst the black and whites trying hard to stay incognito. When the winner went in I leapt to my feet......... however, I did escape without being lynched......... but it was a close call ....
Fantastic memories. I was there also, but in there end. When the second goal went in I stood up and celebrated. THEN I REMEMBERED WHERE I WAS. I thought this was the end. However all the mags around me just stood up and walked out. The journey home on the metro was also memorable as at every stop on the way home more and more of the train got wrecked and thrown out of the open doors. Happy memories
leazes end for me we got kept in ages after the game with a copper on a loudspeaker announcing congratulations on your behaviour and your result! looking back just sums our fans up, hence why we call them the scum
This is a true story, but I went to the junior school in Spennymoor were George Courtney was headmaster. He had told us there was no way he was going to abandon the game, even if they had to sit in the changing rooms until midnight!!! This has been confirmed off other players who I have seen at sporting dinners (I think Cest mentioned Gatesy before) who have said the same thing. The Gates/Gabbiadini combination that nght was awesome from what I saw as highlights on the TV.
Do I remember that match in 1990? One of the best match's I ever attended hence my user name. I was always disapointed that the scum fans didnt dare venture over the half way line. Very brave indeed.
Quite funny how they all started slowing down as they got that far, looking around and hoping for support!!
I was there. Only 16 at time so got the travel bus from Roker Park to SJP. Remember a small scuffle outside between 2 safc fans before match. Tensions were certainly high. Great night, great goals and nice to see fat Quinn and McGhee do sh*t all during the match. Remember Kay's tackle nearly wiped someone out!!!
I was there, right at the front of the Leazers End..I would still love to know how Newcastle managed to erect the invisible barrier when those Mags realised there was nothing preventing them reaching us..
I was there. One of the best nights of my life. Friend of mine's company had a box at Newcastle (he was/is a sunderland supporter though) and invited us so we were quite safe. There were glass panels between all the boxes and Bob Stokoe (name dropping again, syd!) was in the box next door. I remember giving him the thumbs up when the second went in. He had a smile on his face as broad as any I have ever seen so he was deffo a Sunderland man first. Happy days.
I was in a box as well that night and some of the locals tried to smash into a box next to us and had to be calmed down by the police. Oh the joy at fulltime to watch the locals smashing their own seats in angry frustration. They don't like it up 'em, Captain Mainwaring!
Apone said it already. I was at a talk in with Gatesy a few years ago and Gatesy being a ferryhill lad was stood next to referee George Courtney a Spennymoor lad. He had said to George while they were stood in the tunnel, when the craas were on the pitch, "whats going to happen George, will you call it off?" to which he (ref) had replied "no chance, if we have to stay here till midnight, we are finishing this match". Gatesy had a right old chuckle and so did we. Lol
