The former West Ham and Newcastle boss is on standby at the Stadium of Light if Dutch coach Advocaat leaves the club.
There is now a belief on Wearside that unless significant funds are spent on new players before the transfer deadline on September 1, Advocaat will quit and retire in his native Holland.
Allardyce, 60, was originally sounded out by Sunderland earlier this summer after he stood down as West Ham boss.
At the time he declined the approach and then the Wearsiders were delighted to persuade Advocaat to reverse his decision to retire
Allardyce will not be put off by walking into a firefighting challenge at the Stadium of Light. He knows it will be a lucrative challenge and his track record of never being relegated as a boss makes him an attractive appointment.
Advocaat hinted at his mounting frustration yesterday. After masterminding Sunderland’s survival last May he had detailed talks with owner Ellis Short about the way to build a better future for the club.
This included the recruitment of an array of new players.
With the transfer deadline 10 days away Advocaat admitted: “We still have a week, but financial-wise, at the moment, we can’t compete.”
The 67-year-old, who had talks with Short, added: “He said we have to invest to make the team better – that’s what we’ve tried to do.
“To be fair he never mentioned figures. He never said to me ten million pounds, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, like other teams are doing.
“He says we have four or five players. But I said we need quality players. You always get what you pay for.
“Manchester City get a central defender for £32million. Chelsea have one bad game and buy Pedro for £22million – and we have Duncan Watmore.
    “That’s the difference.”

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say, fingers crossed.

I said a week or so ago about Sam keeps coming to mind of being the sort of manager who'd kick some ass in the squad, or words to that effect. Paraphrasing here.

Wouldn't be the best football to watch, according to my hammers mates, but it would be effective.

I hate all this new manager every 2 months ****, but I do think Sam can make us hard to beat and keep us up.

I really thought he'd be our next manager before Old Eggnog re-signed.

Again though, I'm guessing this is just so much lazy journo what-if **** and pure speculation.

Just putting my tin-hat on now for the missiles heading my way.

    Probably a load of bollox

    But

He would sort things out, plus pur fans would actually enjoy his style of football which is very much in the same mould as Peter Reids very successful sides.

I would rather we kept Dick and signed some quality players, but big Sam would not be the end of the world.

Really, I read it has Watmore is our only stand out player at the moment and he cost us less than a mil.Think his point is we're pinning hopes on players we shouldn't be.

Same here, I think he was making the point that Watmore is one of our better players rather than saying he's rubbish. Seems like we're going to have a lot of Dick-isms to contend with this season where he means one thing and it can be interpreted as another quite easily.

Probably just me mate, but i read it that Chelsea can go splash £22m when they need a back up, we have to rely on Watmore (taking nothing away from the lad like)

clearly having "declined the approach" previously he would be well up for taking you on after the transfer window closes, with poor re-enforcements and a poor start to the season having established he was only a back-up anyway. Presumably there is no evidence he declined the approach and no evidence he has been contacted now in any way.
