Many players are mercenaries and will go where they can get the most money. Many are too proud to go to a side that is continuously fighting relegation. Many are too good for us. Where does that leave us regarding attracting decent players then. We can offer one thing that top sides cannot and that is an almost guaranteed first team place every game. The likes of Borini, whilst understandable that HE feels he can get a first team start at Liverpool, the truth is he cannot. With us he could. This should be a big selling point to try and get good players to join us. The bonus would be that they are coming for football reasons and not for money. Hungry players eager to show what they can do every week. Somebody with an outlook like Niall who gave his testimonial money away. Another selling point is that the cost of living here is far lower than in London where a house could cost five times more. The surrounding area is raw and beautiful as well. Just keep them out of the town centre 'til they've signed. There must be so many of these types of player around and we are (still) a club in the best league in the world. Even if they only come to show the big clubs what they can do we would get good performances and a profit at the end of it. Some may stay and become legends and our fans, although highly critical at the moment, do appreciate the right players like SKP, Rowell, Julio or Quinny. We shouldn't sell ourselves short, we have a lot to offer but we need those who make the decisions to do their jobs better or leave and be replaced by people who will deliver a better future.
Some good points there mate although I don't think young lads earning 5 figure salaries every week give a monkey's about the cost of living up north, or the price of a house. Keano mentioned a similar sort of thing though when he said some potential signings would ask what the shopping was like up north for their lasses! We also can't guarantee a first team place for very one either. Just 11 of them.
We need young hungry players who want to play at the highest level. If the get poached by elite teams so be it. We sell for a hefty profit and buy more young and hungry players mixed with proven class as we climb the table. Pretty much the model Southampton and Swansea have used.
Please nobody take this the wrong way - it's not racist or xenophobic, but........ We should have good scouts in places like Serbia, Latvia, Senegal, Bulgaria, etc, etc. Places where £10k per week is a fortune. Ok. Get them young, raw but get the good ones. Bring their families with them. Put them through the academy. They prove themselve, well, ok, we are going to lose them to the so-called big 4, but at a massive profit. A bit of a West Ham Academy for the United Nations. x.
Apart from 'ridiculously' passionate fans & great training facilities we have about as much 'pull' as a gadgey with no arms !!
All we can offer is more money than the other clubs, that is what the players want. What has Manchester got to offer? money and success, that is all players really want. No one wanted to play for Chelsea until the money came along, no one wanted to play for Man City until the money came along. Blackburn had loads of money once and great players. Now they have no money no one wants to play there. Bottom line is people go to clubs for money and success. We can only offer one of those things.
The chance to be a hero, the chance to be worshipped by 40,000 plus people. The chance to make a name for yourself. The chance to become legend. To build something. To wake a sleeping giant. To battle with your fellow team mates to slay the Giants. To become history, to make history! The chance to run with a football and have the roar of 40,000 people roar you on, to chant your name and take you to their hearts as one of their own. What do you say son? Let's put Sunderland back where it belongs......
We had that last week when Watmore scored, even Paul Merson bigged us and Duncan up, unfortunately I think that shining example of what we can be all about got lost in the **** storm. Shame. At least we know he want's to stay. Could be handy player this season Watmore. Anyway I'm digressing.
I vote concrete tony be elected to our transfer negotiating team. I would have signed for that speech alone. PS, are your tits as big as Ms Byrnes?
The reply would be: yeah mate I am up for all of that really believe in the club, my wages are 100k a week plus 5m bung for my agent and a cup of of brown m&ms in the dressing room every week. Then once I get to the club I am allowed to sulk for 5 yesrs while I run down my contract to get a better deal..... But yeah its all about what you said....
