Big spending Sunderland paraded three new stars as Wolves arrived at Roker Park. The Wearsiders had stunned the world of football by splashing out £63,000 on the costliest trio ever to be signed by one club when they added Ray Daniel, Jimmy Cowan, and Billy Elliot to their ranks in the summer of 1953. Dubbed "the Bank of England club" for their spending spree, Sunderland paid Greenock £9,000 for Cowan on June 11, snapped up Daniel from Arsenal six days later for £27,000 and paid a similar amount to Burnley for Elliot on June 23. All three of the internationals-Elliot for England, Cowan for Scotland, and Daniel for Wales-they arrived to boost a squad that already boasted England's Shackleton, and Wales Ford.

I will never forget the excitement that June 11th signing generated (though I thought it was about a week later). Ray Daniel (on the left of the picture) was considered one of the 'blue bloods' of the centre-half position. But Cowan was mega. http://www.not606.com/threads/today-62-years-ago-wow.303438/#post-8026780
