Over the last week few weeks my laptop is freezing. And, when it does, I can't move cursor or use any keys. Sometimes the actual cursor disappears.

Nothing seems to be running in the background either.

I don't use the battery, I'm always on through the mains yet I keep getting a warning (when I re-boot) saying the battery life is coming to it's end....I don't think this is connected to the freezing issue, or is it ?

Memory is fine, space is fine and it's not over heating.

It's doing my ****ing head in having to switch it it off 10 times a day.

This has been happening now for about to weeks.

Yes I've defragged it and run the cleaner every week, I've even gone back to restore points in my desperation....nothing is remedying this ****er !!!.

Any advice would be great !

Sounds like you have broke the battery, for a laptop you should let the battery run down and recharge it back to 100% then use the mains for a week, then run battery down, charge it back up again rinse and repeat.

Same thing happened to my wife's laptop. Told her what to do, took no bloody notice though.

if the cursor on my laptop freezes I usually type ctrl f7 or crtl f5 depending on which laptop I'm using that remedies the problem - from my own experience a dodgy laptop battery can give the symptoms you've described

Its a laptop not a desktop it's designed to be portable not plugged into the mains 24/7 7 days a week. And the battery isn't designed to be charged constantly, im not that much of a techie to explain why, I just know you should do what I suggested, but then 4 years for a lithium battery is probably close to its lifespan anyway, nothing lasts forever.

which version of windows are you using? XP, Vista, 7 or 8?
Also, close the lappie down, switch off at mains, remove battery switch back on at mains and use it without battery for a while....see if you get same problem

If you have never had a battery in it for 4 years, then maybe put one in and see if it helps.

I personally hate laptops and won't use one, prefer my desktop or kindle for portable stuff.

This used to happen to my laptop and when I took it to get it fixed the bloke just replaced my cooling fan, I'm definitely not a laptop geek though so it probably isn't that.

My last update has caused hell on. freezing up, chrome taking longer, but the mouse freezing has been the worst even though the touchpad is fine. My I tunes crashes the first time I open it. All fine before the update. I'm on windows 7.

I'm virus free, It's not my battery either, that's been dead for years, my laptop runs through the mains. As soon as I did the update it's all gone to cock.

I wonder if it'll correct itself after the next update then.

My icon is up for the next one. I dare not touch it fella. Need to make a note of recent programs and system restore to before the last update. Can't be arsed though

It was a regular problem on XP, but this is the first problem I've had with windows 7, I skipped Vista.

Sounds like any number of things going by this thread. Maybe the repair shop beckons?

The nuclear option is to recover the laptop.

You will lose all your data, including whatever is causing the corruption.

Back up everything you want to keep.

Google (your laptop model) recovery. For example Acer aspire 5520 recovery. This will tell you the procedure. Usually it backs up from its own back up already in your computer. It will be something like 'press alt and F10 together immediately after switch on' depending on your model.

    The procedure takes 1-2 hours.

Be sure to back up everything you want to keep.

When it switches back on after recovery you will get the original start up screen (what country, keyboard, time zone and the like)

Sorry mate, the only advice I can give us to lay off the porn sites. Apparently that's not a good idea.

Not being smartass but I have found it pays to read manuals twice before opening equipment. May laptop recommends that running battery down at least once a month will maintain its life.I have done that regularly and It's about seven years old now.
