He COULD, Jimmy. But, given his performances for Germany U21, isn't time we started playing him where he's special - in midfield? SG could play a mean right back, when required, but thankfully he spent his career where he was outstanding as opposed to good. Going back in time, Jimmy Case too. Don't think the Prem game lends itself to sweepers either.

I agree with you - the point is, he's a special player who is capable of playing a number of positions. But to become world class, the club need to find him the right position to excel in.

Personally, I rather him as a CM with the view of replacing Henderson as the box to box. Can's link up play with Volland at the u21 was exception.

I really don't want Can wasted as a DM/holding mid but there is no sign of Rodgers ever bringing one in so Can will have to stay there.

For me, the perfect midfield trio would be a DM with Hendo and Can in front.

I seem to recall Rodgers being forced to play those kids because of no other viable option...

First season, there was literally no one besides Sterling as a wide forward.
Flanagan was played in the second season because of injuries to Johnson and Kelly.
Ibe played because the board told him to recall him from loan as they wouldn't be buying anyone else.

I do think Rodgers' reputation for playing youth is a tad over stated. He plays some when he has to, but rather plays 21-25 year olds he's bought from elsewhere.

I agree - and I think his rep of developing talent is also overstated.

Some will point to the Sterling, Henderson and Coutinho to argue against this but look at the players like Markovic, Can, Moreno, Manquillo - all of whom regressed from their prior season (bar Manq who hardly played). Not to mention the older players who regressed.

I think he is a good coach - but don't buy into the brilliant youth coach reputation.

I would genuinely take Djimi Traore back over Lovren. I wish I was joking.

Rodgers just won't get credit for anything <laugh> Rodgers put Sterling against City, no one expected it. Flanagan? What? He was like fifth choice RB at the time, even McLaughlin was ahead of him. Gave Suso and Wisdom chances when there were other options. I mean c'mon lads, I know Rodgers isn't perfect but you got to give credit where it's due.

Almost as lucky as the "get the ball to Suarez" tactic <yikes> Not even Kenny thought of that one!

How about a happy medium? He is prepared to give youth a chance with the first team set up. And in comparison to other pl managers it's not 15 minutes then back to reserves.

As for Manquillo, he obviously wasn't that sure as he loaned him but didn't buy.

As has been suggested, last year was a **** up and yes it was BR's **** up. He lost any idea of the identity or set up he wanted after Suarez. Comes with the territory of a young manager. Happened to Klop last year too didn't it?

He gets that one year but he better have a new idea of what he wants. ..simple as that.

Have to agree with this. We had one extraordinary season, the following the two main contributors were out of the equation for him. No excuses for him this season, though. This is now well and truly his squad.
