This. Nothing confirmed yet .. and if he has gone to villa it will be because of a large fee and large wages .. plus Whelan was never going to sell him to Ashley ..

I'm not saying that signing free transfers is a bad thing, but the fact is that we sold Andy Carroll for £35m and so far have spent absolutely none of that on new players. I agree, Marveaux could turn out to be a top class player that we signed for free... but we can't expect to sign a top class striker for nothing or perhaps even £7m. We need a #9, someone who has the potential to emulate what Shearer did for the club. AC was the right man to fulfill that task, but we sold him... thus we must replace him.

Alan Shearer cost us £15m back in 1996, back then that was a lot of money. Even with inflation, we're not going to spend anywhere near that much on a striker which is a massive shame. If the club meant what they said, then they would perhaps go out and spend some of that £35m on a striker like Daniel Sturridge.

I agree with all of that, a striker is a necessity and to get a good striker we will have to spend money.... More money than the top brass at the club are probably willing to. Ba is not a replacement for Carroll and is not someone we can rely on to lead the line for a whole season, in my opinion obviously....he may prove me wrong!

I think the thing that gets on my tits the most is when people say that we must be spending the £35m just because we have it available.

Yes, I can see the point that you're making. In my opinion, it's essential that we utilise a good amount of the £35m... for instance, if we spent £20m overall and bought the players that we need, then I'd be more than happy. I'm not counting every penny that we spend, but it's looking like we're going to spend hardly any of the money this summer... especially if Enrique leaves... then we'll end up actually having more money that we started with.

It definitely is looking less rosy at the moment on the transfer front but I suppose we won't be able to properly say until the season starts. **sigh** time to play the waiting game yet again!
