I'm getting somewhat perplexed as to why people think cbs and strikers are all that we require??? Seriously not one of our dm or cm players has a footballing brain, can play a through ball or doing cunning or creative, holy **** they cant pass.

Colback is ok (being generous) sissoko doesn't know his own name at times and anita im sorry hes not fit to boil an egg.

Anyone that tries to convince me im wrong good luck but rest assured if we don't bring someone in who can run a game all the money spent will be irrelevant i absolutely guarantee that.

    Good morning!!!

We definitely do need someone who has a bit of range in passing and can control a game, I hope theyre not counting on De Jong being fit as everything points to that being a disaster, and im not sure what McClarens plans are for Gini but I think hes better on the right of a midfield three..though someone here (sorry I forget who) mentioned he may want to utilise him in a similar way to how Mourinho uses Fabregas

Imo we need at least one striker, at least one CB, A creative attacking midfielder, a left winger with some pace and who can bloody cross...not to mention RB cover. But id be happy enough with just the first four, providing we dont sell anyone

it is a worry that we dont even seem to be looking at the role you mentioned

Exactly ive been reading posts talking up how optimistic they are.....i mean ffs be real the situation has barely improved at all thus far. I'm asking serious questions of the nufc fan intelligencia here? Wtf is wrong with you all? Do you even watch football? How much has changed since we scraped survival? Be realistic we require about 3 more players to begin to scratch the surface and another two before there's any reason to start thinking of a good season.

its likely a season of consolidation after all the garbage we have been through, so im happy enough with small steps being taken. We seem to be trying to bring in quality and its taking more time than the cheaper players we have have previously bought. McClarens making the right noises, Gini is a great signing etc etc

there is some cause for hope

I'd still like a ball player but I can see some mileage of Abeid and Wiji sitting behind a De Jong type. I'm not sure who would be the answer, perhaps Schteve will look at Hughes.

Same as SDJ. Massive season for both. Potentially both could be very very useful. SDJ has serious talent and his heading ability would give us something we are sadly lacking. I think Cabella has talent. If he can get a bit stronger and learn to use his body as other foreign players have then I'm sure we'll see more of what we did away at Chelsea. I'm hoping we have a Nobby situ on our hands, but he has to knuckle down like he did. I'd give Cabella another 6 months but after that I'd be worried about him. Same goes for SDJ, another longish injury its a cut your losses situ.

You could have two cracking AM on your hands, or two complete duds. Disappointing to see Cabella miss pre season, major blow to helping him get better here, and often missing a pre season is a prelude to lots of annoying niggly injuries.

    Let's look at all positions.
For me, we need to start shipping some of the deadwood out soon.

Nobody is worried about the midfield because Abeid, Anita, Colback, Tiote, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Aaraons, De Jong Cabella and Perez as a wide option is comfortably top ten in both quality and depth. At most we need another wide player.

    cheers, great post.

haha, hard to argue. We just need him be to be good enough for us though. I just want a flying winger as well though dammit.

Apart from brutalising the opposition and willingness to take a yellow card for the team, I really don't rate Tiote myself. When the chips are down, he scurries right into his shell like the rest of them, a characteristic you don't want from someone who's job it is to keep the midfield defensively organised. Guy has very little character & his creativity is bare minimum.

I think midfield is not the strongest sure, but it will do. It's the defenders I'd be preoccupied with, you can question if the strikers, wingers & midfield isn't what you'd want it to be, but we all know for a fact that the defence is ****e.

On a separate note, character is something this team desperately needs. Someone with a backbone, a real captain material bloke. I'd like us to sign someone like that, maybe a few extra years on him, and he wouldnt expensive. But someone who on the pitch, can represent the coaches & the manager.

A bit like when Brian Clough signed Dave Mackay, it is something we sorely lack at this club.

I disagree entirely....Tiote over anita anyday and our midfield sucks

There appears to be an illusion in which people think we concede to many oh its our defence or we dont score oh its our strikeforce, however in reality every area of pitch is terrible.

Its the entire team its like a soggy jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing.

In midfield I would loved us to sign Marcelo Diaz of Chile from Basel. Great little midfield general in front of defence, in truth the main reason for Chile's recent success along with Sanchez. Hamburg bought him in Feb to help fight relegation and he scored a cracker of a free kick to save them. I'd imagine he didn't cost much. A proper leader on the pitch. We need someone of that kind of ilk like you say. Then one at the back. The spine has been sadly missing.

Tiote aside we are lightweight in midfield, and even he gets knocked about a bit by the bigger more aggressive players. Maybe an alternative to the ball playing midfielder, just have a proper specialist destroyer who takes people out of the game and gives room for our more attacking midfielders. Maybe some nutcase from the eastern block would do!
