When it comes to health and food almost nothing is "established" beyond doubt...however, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest saturated fat is absolutely nowhere near as bad, if it is bad at all, as was once thought. The "western pattern diet" is pretty ****ty for humans but the jury is still out as to why.

There is a fairly well established link between people who's life style includes eating high levels of processed meats and higher incidences of certain illnesses such as heart disease and some cancers. However, it's not easy with food studies to account for other lifestyle choices and habits. There is a stronger link between high levels processed meat consumption and higher incidences of colon cancer. This may be due to the use of Nitrates in the curing process which convert into what are called nitrosamines, which have been highly associated with various cancers.

That said life has GOT to be too short to skip the odd Bacon sarnie, Sausage butty or Charcuterie board. It's certainly far to shorty to skip a reasonable amount of good quality read meat as part of a balanced diet.

Unsmoked for me with HP sauce and if at all possible a couple of slices of black pudding tucked in there.

Also the Bacon Vodka Ernie mentioned makes a fantastic Bloody Mary!

People can smoke 40 a day all their life and never get cancer, smoking dramatically increases the risk of developing cancer but it doesn't guarantee you'll get it.

Same with a bad diet, your increasing your risk of certain diseases and the link between certain foods/diets and particular diseases is well established but there'll always be people that are the exception.

How is "smoked" winning, this is a travesty and I demand a recount!!!!

Anyone who prefers smoked bacon is a sex attack waiting to happen in my eyes.

I think BBC DJ Richard Bacon always had an uphill battle to achieve more than Francis Bacon; the Irish-born British figurative painter known for his bold, emotionally charged and raw imagery. However I think Richard's drug stained past (and subsequent sacking from Blue Peter) unfortunately left him with no chance of surpassing the great Artist.

    So it's Francis for me.

Regarding diet and lifestyle ... all things in moderation, including moderation. So enjoy a fry-up, a booze-up or any other apparently unhealthy choice but not every day or it could result in a ****- up.

The problem is that dietary experts can never seem to stick with an opinion.......they said dietary cholesterol was a killer, now they are saying the evidence no longer supports it

Then that fats were bad........now the opinion is that this is not the case

Then that margarine was better than butter,,,,,,now it's clear that butter is healthier than hydrogenated vegetable oil

Sugar is the new evil..........but sugar replacements like Aspartame may cause cancer

The air that we breathe is potentially more toxic to us than anything we may eat or drink as part of a normal diet

Some of the most unhealthy people I know are vegetarians

Your right in what your saying but that is the very essence of science, theories are based on observation and evidence, these are accepted until someone is able to prove otherwise.

Its only natural progression that some of the science behind nutrition changes over time as it does in all other scientific fields.

The problem with nutritional science is there's often an agenda behind it, if a theory is accredited to a 'University study', 'scientists' or 'a nutrition expert', then take it with a pinch of salt, you don't know who's funded it or if its been peer reviewed. If its in a reputable publication then its far more trustworthy as it has undergone serious scrutiny before been accepted, even then there's always a chance it could be disproven at a later date.
