The former Liverpool midfielder Brian Hall has died at the age of 68 after losing his battle with leukaemia. Hall, born in Glasgow, made 224 appearances for Liverpool between 1969 and 1976, scoring 21 goals and helping the Reds to two league titles, two Uefa Cups and an FA Cup. Tributes have been pouring in for the popular Hall, a university graduate who had come to Liverpool to study a degree in mathematics. He was diagnosed with leukaemia several years ago but had appeared to be winning his battle with the illness. A Liverpool statement read: “Liverpool Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player Brian Hall at the age of 68. One of his finest games for the club came when he played the full match in the 1974 FA Cup final as Bill Shankly’s Liverpool beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Wembley. “Brian also hit a dramatic FA Cup semi-final winner in 1971 when Liverpool beat Merseyside rivals Everton to reach Wembley for the first time since 1965. Brian returned to the club in 1991 to head the club’s public relations department, a role he held until 2011 when he retired through health reasons. “The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club go out to his family and friends at this sad time.” His former Liverpool team-mates Terry McDermott and Ray Clemence both paid their tributes on Twitter. McDermott said: “Sad to hear the news about Brian Hall, a good player and a great person. Condolences to all of his family.” While Ian Rush added: “RIP Brian Hall - a truly gent!!” Just before I started watching the reds, but a true great for us. Rest in peace "little Bamber".
Little Bamber was the epitome of Shanks' pass-and-move philosophy. I remember my dad coming home half cut after the '71 semi-final (sorry tobes!) and our whole family (except our mum) dancing around the living room watching the Gerd Muller-style winner against the ****e on MoTD. Met him the next year when he presented me a loser's medal after we (Colwell Rd) wer e beaten by SFX in a schools cup final. Think he was the one whom Shanks got the Chairman Mao quote from? He, Cally and Cormack played some lovely football, you know. Legend.
He used to do the stadium tours. Great player and ambassador for the club, will be missed. Thoughts with his family. Hall's first ever goal for Liverpool was v Everton in FA Cup semi final 1971. please log in to view this image RIP please log in to view this image
Great little player. Was in the team when I first started standing on the Kop. Him and Heighway both went to Liverpool University as well as playing for LFC. In those days you had to plan for life after football as the wages, although above average, were nothing like the money that is paid today when compared to average salaries.
