Seems that ye olde transfer market is going bonkers at the moment with some huge sums of money being dished about for players many consider to be good but not 'world class' (possibly Torres aside).. some of the most recent purchases are listed below .. what do you think .. worth it (to the team that purchased them) or just plain madness:

    Torres - £50M
    Carrol - £35M
    Suarez - £22M
    Ashley Young £20M
    Jordan Henderson - £20M
    Phil Jones £16M
    Stewart Downing - £20M
    David De Gea - £18M
    Conor Wickham - £13M
    Keiron Dyer - Free

I'm sure there's a few more but these are the big ones from the most recent windows (so far) ..

    <ok>

Ones in red I think are worth these fees.
Ones in orange I think are a risk; but worth it.
    The others are insane fees.

Possibly these players are worth these fees, but when there are players out there like Tiote and Ben Arfa for tiny fees by comparison, it just seems ludicrous.

Hmm . I really wasn't sure whether Dyer was worth it or not, seems it is a crazy fee alright <ok>

But what of the folk who pop up on here looking for £15M to be spent on N'Zogbia, £20M on Sturridge etc .. just because we apparently have it .. and then lambasting the board for not dishing out the money .. I think some of the above show that you can spend a fortune (Edin Dzeko anyone?) and get very little in return ..

I actually expect Edin Dzeko to have a good season. Bedding in is done, full pre-season and raring to go.

Possibly .. or Man City may have a Schevchenko on their hands .. just didn't see anything from him last year to suggest he was their big white hope, saying that - if Tevez goes it might free him up a bit .. just an example anyway, we've had plenty of expensive duffers ourselves I could have used ..

Isnt this the last big spending window before the FIFA financial fair play rules kick in? Clubs spend big now because they wont be able to next season.

Wonder if these big fee players then have similarly linked big wages, wouldn't the FIFA financial fair play thing also impact that in the spend vs. annual revenue piece .. might be wrong though, don't really know much about it (think I'll have a read up on it though) ..

Thinking of our Mackem friends and their wage vs. revenue ratio, think someone posted an article putting it quite high before they went on their spending spree and they've brought in a couple of 'mature' players who could be on considerable wages as well ...

I think for some of these players (prime example being Carroll) it's a matter of how much it would cost to prize the player away from the club. Everyone is in agreement that Carroll IS NOT worth 35 million. But at the time, he was priceless to us. We would never have sold for what he was actually worth. If someone's got something you really want, and you have the money, then you are most likely to pay out the arse for it if that's what it takes to get it.

But yeah, ridiculous amounts of money, and it does seem to be ruining transfer windows (as everyone will want silly money for their players now)

But as Smudger said, it's all to do with the fair play rules too - will be interesting to see how things pan out next year.

Carroll could turn out to be a one season wonder. But with Downing they have the supply but if them 2 get injured at the same time could be abit awkward for Jester Kenny

  15. Young didn't cost 20m, he cost 15m didn't he?

Personally i think the only fee on that list that is worth it is Suarez.

The rest are ridiculous imho <ok>

  20. I'd say Darren Bent is worth his amount if he continues scoring 15-25 goals a season.
