Henderson appointed Liverpool captain 10th Jul 2015 - Latest News please log in to view this image please log in to view this image Author: Liverpool FC Jordan Henderson has today been officially confirmed as Liverpool Football Club's new captain. The Reds midfielder takes the armband permanently as he prepares to begin his fifth season with the club and head out on tour to Asia and Australia this weekend. He said: "I'm absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club. "When Steven [Gerrard] wasn't in the team last season, I tried to do the best I could when I stepped in and took the armband. Now I'll be looking to carry that on and continue to grow as a captain. "I'll look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try to give them - or help them with - whatever they need from me." Henderson arrived at Anfield in June 2011 and has clocked up 186 appearances in establishing himself as an important figure in Brendan Rodgers' squad. The 25-year-old assumes the role following the departure of Gerrard earlier this summer after his 12-year stint as Liverpool skipper. Having been appointed vice-captain last September, Henderson deputised for his fellow Englishman in 2014-15 and has led the team on 19 occasions to date. Outlining why the No.14 was his choice, Rodgers highlighted his dedicated approach to the duties required both on and off the pitch for the Reds. The manager explained: "Jordan is someone who leads through example - through his actions, attitude and application. He shows total commitment to the game and is a role model professional. "He is also greatly respectful of the great traditions associated with being Liverpool captain and the responsibilities that come with it. He has been blessed to learn first-hand from one of the greatest the club has ever had, in Steven Gerrard. "Jordan has grown as a person and as a player since arriving at Liverpool and is ready to take up this challenge. He will be his own person, with his own style of leadership and his own ideas and methods." Such faith demonstrated in Henderson by Rodgers over the last three years is something the midfielder is eager to repay. He said: "I've always said the manager has been brilliant for me. He's improved me consistently in every aspect of football, including off the pitch, and still is - I'm still learning from him. "I'm very grateful for what he's done for me and the faith he's shown in me, and I'll try to repay him as best I can by doing my best for the team - I'll always put them first." In operating as Gerrard's understudy for a season, Henderson feels he garnered plenty of knowledge from the 35-year-old's leadership and has naturally tried to use that to enhance his own game. However, he's well aware of the importance of having the conviction to make his own decisions for the benefit of his teammates. "I've learnt a lot off Stevie and how he conducted himself as the captain of this club both on and off the field," said Henderson. "You'll always learn from top players - and Steven was exactly that. "I'll use what I learnt from him to help me, but I also have to do things in the way I think is right. "I'll carry on from what I was doing last season and I'll also try to take on more responsibility for the team and my teammates. We all have the same goal - and that's to bring success to this club and our incredible supporters." I would like to see Can made vice. Good experience for him and he is U21 captain for Germany, so is suited to the role.
yes but it could be also something to work toward. I'd like to see him take over the CM role first. IBWT was right yesterday. it is bound to be skertl.
I know everyone's already including Can as CDM/CM in their lineups but it might still be another season until the position is his Let's see how preseason goes, which finally starts Tuesday
You should earn the captaincy and vice captaincy by the effort you show on the pitch and off it....so Mario should be captain and vice captain Good luck to Henderson....a real example of a young lad who has worked hard for his chance and even harder to stay in the team. Exactly the attitude we need around the club and for the youth to look up to. Let's hope he can handle the added pressure of following Gerrard as captain.
true. I mean in my day the captaincy bounced around alan hanson, ronnie whelan, ian rush, mark wright was signed and handed it by souness...... ince, redknapp... john barnes... then hyppia took it and then gerrard. Gerrards had it for a very long time so i don't think its really a thing LFC have given to only locals or to guys i nthe club a long time... back when we were really successful thommo, souness, neal and dalglsih all had it. I would be one for saying hey why does it have to be stuck with one guy while he is at club. why not say this year you are captain son.. next year you won't be.
I like Henderson and I respect how far he has come but giving him the armband pretty much shows how far we have fallen as a club. As a leader, he doesn't inspire. Hard work, professional, backs his teammates up - Check. But in terms of taking responsibility, delivering in big games, grabbing game by scruff of the neck - No. Sakho and Can are the only real leaders on the pitch in terms of their ability and the authority they carry. Coutinho is a leader by example.
I'd agree largely. I think henderson initially reacted well to armband but he's taken on too much and handing him pens is stoking an ego he cant back. I think its an armband and he sets a tone in work rate but there's no organisation coming from him and he shouldn't be the go to set piece guy either. we can't be confusing captaincy with the Gerrard role/ego.
How do you know? New see te team for 90 minutes a week, who knows what goes on behind closed doors and what influence he has on others. Who cares is can and Sakho are leaders, brilliant but you can't make them both captain so does that mean if you made Sakho captain that can shouldn't be leading on the pitch, The armband means someone tosses the coin, but other players should still step up and lead their positions. Carragher was a as a much bigger leader than Gerrard but he didn't need the armband to organise and lead the defence, he just did it. Same should happen for Sakho if he has it in him
Sakho's never on the pitch to lead anyone and has already shown his sulky side and Can you have to give time to settle before anything else. You can't judge whether Hendo can inspire or not yet. You may be right but at least give the lad a chance Of all the players in our current squad he's earned the right to give it a go has he not? If some of your favourites (Sterling, Mario and Sakho) had shown the kind of commitment Henderson has then we'd be a damn site better off than we are now
Meh. As long as he is picking up trophies at the end of the season I wouldn't care less. I don't know why the captaincy is given too much significance.
Because I watch what he does on the pitch. You say natural leaders emerge with or without the armband - Hendo didn't have it for large parts of last season and he didn't rise to the occasion. And maybe we have different opinions on the captain if you think he's there for the coin toss. If that was the case, why not have any Tom, Dick or Jordan have it. At the moment - we are Liverpool football club and our captain is Jordan Henderson. If that inspires you, then again, it shows you how far we have fallen as a club and how levels have dropped significantly.
In Hendo's defence, it will be interesting to see how he is without Gerrard beside him. I do think he will improve.
People lead in different ways. Carragher led led by being vocal gerrard led by example - very rarely did I see Gerrard get the team pumped up on the field. Only the the players know if Hendo is decent captain. His record as captain speaks for itself, and if players respect him then why not? He doesn't get into trouble, shows a brilliant attitude and sea a good example for the players and youth that even if you have a bit of a bad spell to start, you can come through and be a key player if you work and train hard. By all accounts he's one of the hardest trainers so younger players should look up to that.
I have a sneaky feeling we will see a big step up from Hendo now. I always saw glimmers of it but he always stepped back and head down when Gerrard was on the pitch. Understandable that he maybe was a bit in awe of him or naively felt surplus when Stevie was on the pitch leadership wise..I think he'll be great. As someone said yesterday, as long as he doesn't think he has to do everything Stevie did with ser pieces etc..do what you are good at and as a captain back those that are better at the things you are not
Gerrard wasn't a great leader, but he was an inpsiration, as his leadership was by example. Henderson is in no way, shape or form going to be able to fill his boots, as he's not got the game to. The role of Captain is completely overblown though, as very often the captain isn't the most vocal on the pitch, he's not the one who's cajolling and encouraging the most, in the very best teams there's usually 3 or 4 leaders on the pitch, so the armband is little more than a prefects badge.
