Funky Fish is **** and 53 degrees is even ****ter, I wouldn't eat at either if they were free. Though it's obviously not them he's competing with if it's got a take-away, he's less than two miles from Frydays and that's a whole different kettle of fish.
I had used him for years, in the days when he only had a chip van.. He saw the pound signs and quality droped over a 12mth period ..he spent to much time at other shops he had opened, leaving the brough shop to be run by local youth on cheap labour
I know it's personal preference, I use Grovehill Fisheries behind my house in Beverley and it's awesome, but some of the neighbours won't go near it. Last time I had Funky Fish the batter was nice, the fish was tasty and the chips weren't too soggy. Decent peas, decent patties. I think **** is a bit harsh, it does a job for the people of Brough.
I really don't like it at all, I went a few times when it opened, but I'll never go again, the chips taste funny and the batter's too thick.
Funkys chips are never cooked, always white... I like nice brown, well cooked chips, and a light crisp batter
It's ok, you could always go to South Cave takeaway. Seriously, how is that place still going? Why are people still going there, it's so bad.
The current top ten according to Chip Advisor... 1) East Park Chippy, Holderness Road 2) A&M Fisheries, Hessle Road 3) J's Fishbar and Restaurant, King Edward Street 4) Frydays, Hull Road, Anlaby 5) Cottingham Fisheries, King Street, Cottingham 6) Newton's Traditional Fish & Chips, County Road South 7) The Friary, Whitefriargate 8) Frydays, Hallgate, Cottingham 9) Bob Carver's, Trinity House Lane 10) Kingfisher Fish and Chips, Spring Bank West http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/CHIP...tory-26169248-detail/story.html#ixzz3fJZFPXcR Not sure how Uncle Bob got on there, I assume it's just for historic/nostalgic reasons.
I haven't been in there for a couple of decades, though it's not a chippy any more is it, isn't it just a Chinese now?
Nice to see the Friary in that list, a hidden gem of Whitefriargate, Bob Carvers round the corner is ruddy terrible, doesn't deserve to be at number 9
The last time I went in there they had a snooker room upstairs (1997). They did chippy for a long time, but even for Chinese food, it's bloody awful. Which is worrying, because if you're Chinese and you own and operate a Chinese takeaway, one of your key skills should be to be able to cook the cuisine of your home country.
I think they do both, but they do them both poorly. Funky Fish in Brough is utter ****e and 53 Degrees is slightly less ****e. Market Weighton chippy is ok. Not the Harpers one. 149 in Brid is good, used that a few times - best in the UK apparently.
53 degress is okay for patty, peas and chips, but the fish isn't clever. Harpers in Market Weighton's crap as well, where's the other one?
It used to be a really good chippy(when it was a proper chippy), it had a take-away in one half and a sit down restaurant in the other half and they used to open early and operate the restaurant as a cafe during the day. I was working on a house round the corner around 81/82 and we used to go in for a fry-up every morning.
Unless I get assurance that the haddock is skinned and boned, the chips are leaning more towards soggy and the waiter doesn't turn their nose up if I ask for curry sauce to be drizzled LIBERALLY over the lot, I'll not set foot in the place. I would also like to see a pyramid of faded Tizer, Irn Bru and Pepsi cans on prominent display.
I see Cottingham gets 2 chippies in the top 10. If we are comparing pub restaurant standard fish & chips can we add Blue Bell in Cot to the local competition, superb and recommended.
