Glasgow City are exploring plans to build the first purpose-built women's football stadium in the UK.

The sports facility would have a standard pitch and training facilities in Auchinairn, East Dunbartonshire.

It would be used by the Glasgow City Foundation and other community groups.

Glasgow City Foundation's Douglas Barnett said: "This will be the first purpose-built women's football facility in the UK - promoting the sport to new generations of girls and women."

The foundation, the charitable element of Glasgow City Football Club, and East Dumbartonshire Council are entering into a formal agreement to explore the development of a joint sport and community well-being facility.

City have played the majority of their home games in recent years at Springburn's Petershill Park and Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: "This agreement follows recent engagement with the local community to determine whether there was interest in working with Glasgow City Foundation to explore the potential for a sporting facility alongside our place approach and the new community facilities we are planning for this area.

"Through both the information session we held in May and the online survey we hosted on the council website, there was overwhelming support for the development of this proposal from those who took part."

City have won the Scottish title eight times in a row and made it as far as the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League.

Last week, head coach Eddie Wolecki Blackannounced he was stepping down after eight years at the club.

    What's a women's stadium?

Musicals on the concourse big screens.

    Rosè on tap.

Programme sellers offering take a break and ok magazine.

    Mirrors in the toilets.

    World's gone mad.

It's the first stadium being built primarily for a women's football team,as opposed to every other stadium that has been built for the male teams, but are also used by women's teams these days...Charlie1 will be happy about the mirrors though :)

To be fair,I have no idea as I haven't been to Doncaster for about 37 years.I think this announcement is a bit of media friendly spin at a time when the women's game is in the spotlight, but there is still a nugget of truth in it maybe,as the Doncaster Belles(are they still called that?) facility sounds like an adjunct to the men's teams ground,if you get my drift.

Doncaster Rovers Belles play at the Keepmoat, the same as the Men's, they used to play on that open pitch/athletics ground next door, but they moved into the stadium a few years back.

    This is a good idea.....

The opportunities are endless. When the subs are getting ready to come on, instead of warming up, they could vacuum the lines.

When one team is attacking, their keeper could be dusting the goalposts.

    So much potential here.

Turn it upside down and that big orange plastic stretcher could double as an ironing board...
