Morning gents. I can understand some being almost afraid to feel optimistic but at least, lets be honest, this summer is poles apart from anything weve seen in over a decade. So much of an improvement within the club, Pearson etc and making our most expensive signing in Ward since we left the PL, that we are almost unrecognisable as the train wreck of recent years. Even the wallies cant find anything to sneer about
Ajose not going anywhere, according to Rosler he's showing the rest up in pre season. Nice to see the lad is making an effort to impress.
I think they would of stayed up with Arry at the helm but because the FA and England set up don't like him and many of the fans don't like him for what ever reason. Yes he's a shyster blah blah blah, they get in to this mind set where they want him to fail and one tiny mistake and they can jump on his back and sneer at him. Personally I like him and I think he's a good manager.
I would also keep him even if only for back-up.. What we don't want is the team to be doing fine, we get an injury to let's say our new left sided wide player and then that sets off a chain reaction. Taylor moves forward to fill the slot, Berardi covers LB and Wottoon is brought in to play RB Would much prefer to have a settled team and formation and a few players sitting in the wings who can cover a couple of various positions.
Good to hear Ajose is showing everyone up. I wish anyone who pulls on the white shirt well and hope he wins a few on here over. He certainly has potential and to write that off over a few indifferent games under the hock is madness.
Hi Josh. in general I like your posts, usually thoughtful and sensible. However, I would say, if we wanted to be a one trick pony i.e. two wingers and one centre forward and we want to assume everyone stays fit, doesn't get suspended and don't lose form your argument sticks but I think Erwin is interesting for several reasons. He can play across the front three so gives us flexibility for all the scenarios I have given of players being missing. He gives us options in a game if it isn't quite happening for someone. He gives us variability if we play someone with, say, a short left hand side of defence to play on the right and drift in rather than play as a winger and, maybe he gives us the option of playing a front two if we choose. I get what you are saying about Varney, definitely but the real problems there were A) that was our usual game plan and B) he wasn't very good!!! Think back to what a fine footballer Paul Madeley was (or watch some videos) - he didn't really have a "position" but he was invaluable. I'm with Mike the super scout on this!!
Actually, I had a question for you. Just wondered, what do you do for a living? You seem to have more holidays than Judith Chalmers and, when you are not on holiday, you are at the GG's
I'm not against the signing of Erwin, don't get me wrong. I'm happy we are signing young players, I haven't meant to come across as doom and gloom or whatever. I'm one of the biggest advocates for competition for every place. I was merely saying that I'm not quite at an optimistic stage yet as we still have a lot to do. Wood being our only signing that will immediately improve the first team is one of those reasons. Not saying we won't utilise Erwin well or he won't do well just don't think he'll be likely to walk into our starting lineup imo.
Morning All, I'm with you on this Marcos. There are other positives about Erwin too. First of all, he played midfield for most of last season. Not bad for a striker, and shows much more adaptability & talent than has been mentioned so far. The other quality he has is so blimmin' obvious - height. I like a tall team, especially at set pieces. Can't get enough big guys. Used to be murder playing against the likes of Wimbledon - no-one had enough tall players in the team to mark all their tall players.
I find myself wondering what our team's average age is now. As far as I can see, we've only got 4 players that are 28 or over. 2 we'll keep - Antenucci & Bamba, and 2 we'll hopefully lose - Sharp & Morison. Another reason to be positive this pre season.
