Shearer obviously wins it, but i remember the day we signed Papiss and I was in the office, i'd played quite alot of Football Manager and I knew this guy, like I really knew he was a preditor and I was telling anyone that would listen that he would be averaging a goal a game no sweat
and for the first 4 months he did, which made it even better cos i could tell people how i called it!

It's funny how the top scorers in tournaments or the league all play alongside Peter Beardsley

In terms of excitement, then it has to be Arthur Cox signing Keegan as a player. I think a lot of people forget how ridiculous a signing that was for us at the time. A front line of Keegan, Waddle and Beardsley, fed by Terry McDermott was unreal at a club that had been dead on its feet.

My first thought for value for money was Rob Lee, who pound for pound was an unbelievable buy and servant to the club. However, in terms of players we bought and didn't come through the ranks then its hard to beat the £500 we paid Tow Law Town for Chris Waddle.

Best pound for pound, defo Demba Ba. Just watch the Man Utd game... Just watch it. Honestly, brilliant CF performance. Ably assisted by wor Shola, of course <laugh>

I remember thinking signing Patrick Kluivert was a pretty big deal. Shame it never quite worked, him and Bellamy would have been lethal. But you couldn't drop Alan...
Pound for pound, I always thought we got quite decent value out of Acuna. Not the best ever, and some think he was awful, but for a million he put in some good performances. I remember him and McLen bossing Arsenal's midfield in a cup game I think...

Viana - such a shame. Named Young European Footballer of the Year or Golden Boy or whatever it was called. I watched him in the U21 Euro's, he was unbelievable. Two players stood out a mile. Him and this young goalie named Petr Cech. Viana never got past the group but did manage to take the piss out of the English in the group stage. Cech was named player of the tournament and was ridiculous.

Then it was announced we were getting him. The best young number 10 around. Incredible. Then he couldn't find a role as we stuck with 442 and Gary Speed. He alternated between back up for him and Robert.

In my humble opinion the best signing we ever made was Jim Iley.
The wonderful man scored the winner in 1965 against Bolton to get us promoted.

You didn't say he had to live up to the level of excitement he generated so I am going with Michael Owen!

And on the best pound for pound player you can't go far wrong with a freebie so Jack Colback has to be in contention. An added bonus is the angst it causes our friends down the road who can't seem to decide whether he wasn't that good when he joined us or he actually was that good and we haven't improved him.

    And for the other two
    3. Colback again. They told us we weren't getting much but we all now beg to differ.
    4. The Shola-Messi swap deal although I think we started that one. The recent Sammy to Everton one comes close as well.
