If I was having a go: Gary Sprake Roland Nilsson John Charles Neil Franklin George Hardwick Billy Bremner Graeme Souness Johnny Giles Wil Mannion Derek Dooley Raich Carter
Not sure why Downing's the funny one, he's a tidy player, just did **** at Liverpool. He's a much better player than Kenny, Richardson, Kilgallon, Howson and the two strikers.
He really isn't. Look at how well West Ham did from August to January, Downing was probably the most important player in that. He's a better player than anyone on our books, with the possibly exception of Chester.
Love most of that side! Would, however, replace Dooley with John Charles and bring in Jack Charlton alongside Neil Franklin.
This is a multi generational team, a right bunch of Charlies. A very attacking formation - even GK Charlie Williams could score. .....................................Charlie Williams Charlie Palmer.......Charlie Hurley......John Charles.......Carlos Alberto Charlie Mitten.......Mel Charles.........Charlie George......Charlie Adam .......................Charlie Austin..............Charlie Buchan.......... Probably only Carlos Alberto never kicked a ball in Yorkshire, but his granddad docked in Hull once, so I believe ?
Michael Dawson?! Des Walker, Rio Ferdinand and Norman Hunter get in ahead of him without even thinking about it.
As in post#10 , with Terry Cooper in for Madeley. The latter being able to play as a sub in every position except GK. Awesome team.
I remember the match where Sprake threw the ball into his own net. I seem to remember it being at Anfield and the Kop struck up a chorus of Careless Hands.
A Boxing Day, I think. I worked in Leeds at the time. Enjoyed going back to work. Edit : Just looked on SoccerBase and it wasn't Boxing Day. Must have been the 2-0 in Dec 1967.I was going out with a lass from Leeds who went to that game and it the only one which fits. The radio announcer put Careless Hands on at half time he reckoned it was coincidence and the record which would have been played anyway. Yeah, sure.
Aye. Madeley may have done a better job than both Sprake & David Harvey at the time....but who needed a GK with that defensive unit. Not pretty, 'effing effective though.
