It's a long standing 'joke' isn't it 'the Chinese will eat everything that swims except a submarine, everything that flies except an aeroplane, and everything with four legs except a table.' That they eat dogs, cats, etc. isn't new, it's this 'festival' that disgusts the rest of the world. It's unashamed, unbridled, unnecessary cruelty on their part.

Masssive double standards going on here if anyone is outraged by what's happening in China yet can't see the truth / irony of their participation in the western meat industry by consuming meat and dairy regularly and with no clear idea of its provenance and production in a hyper-modern, mechanised death machine...

If you eat meat why are certain forms of it taboo and plenty of others are not. It's all meat in the end, if you're part of the system you should avail of all possible food sources from prime steaks to meal-worms. Yet most in the west are pathetically squeamish about eating the latter. If more different types of meat were eaten annually it would lead to a less biased focus on traditional meat sources, moo-cows, oinkers, chickadees and swim swims and perhaps help reduce the environmental impact and stresses on those animalias

Now where did I put those deer steaks... oh **** I can't eat!!

Grossed out at the thought of eating dog?
Serving up a dish of man's best friend is a cultural taboo in the U.S. that would bring PETA protestors to your doorstep faster than you say bow wow. But while only only a handful of states that actually have laws on the books that ban the practice, in many states, like Pennsylvania for example, it's still legal to sell and eat dogs and cats.
Yet, in some parts of the world, these animals are often on the menu. If you don't fancy trying a meat that could have been a cuddly pet, proceed with caution when exploring local dishes in the following countries.

    1. China
Dog meat has long history in Chinese cuisine and the practice of cooking with it continues today in many regions. While the country has at time curtailed its sale (the government banned the sale of dog meat at local restaurants during the Beijing Olympics), it's still common to see dog hanging in the country's many wet markets.
    2. Nigeria
Dog meat is a common dish in this West African nation. Some believe that eating dog helps build immunity to disease. People have reportedly been gorging on suya, grilled meat often made from dog, to protect against the Ebola outbreak, despite health official warnings. It's also believed that eating dog may also improve one's sex life.
    3. Arctic and Antarctic
While dogs are usually used for sledding through the icy tundra, when the meat supply is running low those that live in the Arctic, Greenland and other cold-climate countries will turn to dog meat as a source of protein.

    4. Vietnam
Dog eating a common practice in many Vietnamese homes and restaurants. "Dog is the go-to dish in Vietnam for drinking parties, family reunions and special occasions," according to the Guardian. Unfortunately, demand for the meat has gotten so high that an underground smuggling operation out of Thailand has been snatching pets and street dogs to sell on the lucrative meat market.
    5. Switzerland
While many people often associate eating dogs with Asian or African cuisine, the practice is still common among farmers in Appenzell and St. Gallen districts of the country. The practice is legal as long as the animal is killed humanely and the meat is not sold for commercial purposes.
    6. Indonesia
While dog is considered taboo to eat (along with pigs) in this predominantly Muslim country, the meat is consumed at special occasions such as weddings or holidays.

Dog meat was once a popular meat in South Korea, but the practice has fallen out of favor with younger generations who prefer to keep dogs as pets, reports CTV. The government has neither made its sale legal or explicitly banned it under South Korean laws. It's estimated that between 2

Why is there an issue with this, this year? Sure some people who have different culture to ours are shocked at our treatment of animals like cows & chickens as well. Seems like an excuse to attack Chinese people & China to me.

No one mentioned anything about racism, only you.

I'm just saying British & American media have a clear agenda against countries like China, Russia etc. and look down on their beliefs and customs and attempt to make them look uncivilised and evil.

Then you look at the facts and our elected government want to legalise fox hunting. We keep chicken and cows in terrible cramped conditions and breed them just to be slaughtered. I don't remember such a massive campaign against these things. I think there's been more broadcasting time being given to this than protests against all of our poor treatment against animals combined.

Well done for completely contradicting yourself in the space of 2 paragraphs, as you've defined racism in the second one.

Whatever, man. You can be right, I'll be wrong, I don't really give a **** <laugh>

My original argument still stands and its proven by the fact its taken until 2015 for anyone to say anything about this. With the internet existing for so long are we really going to believe that people have only heard about this in 2015?? With our record of treating animals & immigrants in recent times we really should be the last people to start telling other people how to do things. People are sitting here in the UK telling people this is wrong and signing petitions while they totally missed the fact that they let a government into power that wants to legalise fox hunting again. Just great.

To be fair Lucaaas there have been documentaries about this kind of thing for years. I once saw one where live cats were placed in boiling water because it made them easier to skin and dogs were hit on the head and skinned whilst their legs were still kicking (explained as a nervous reaction by the vendor), another one shown a live fish thrown on a hotplate and when the flesh on it`s side was cooked it was sliced off and the fish thrown back into the tank to continue swimming around until somebody ordered the other half.
I have no problem with people eating any animal, it is these kind of barbaric actions I have issues with.

I've seen a lot of stuff like that on facebook, and its not nice to see. I don't know why people get off on being violent and abusive to animals but they do, and I am also 100% against it. But I'm also against picking and choosing which things we condemn and which things we turn a blind eye too. Have you ever been to a chicken farm in this country? Its ****ing terrible conditions for any living thing to have to endure.

It hasn't though, google it, it's been on peoples radar for years, you noticing it for the first time via this thread on a football forum doesn't mean that it's not been highlighted in the past.

This issue has got nothing to do with the Govt either, this is ordinary people who in conjunction with a number of animal welfare groups want to put an end to the barbarism that goes with this festival.

It [this festival] only started in 2010 and every year there's been international condemnation.

As I said yesterday it's a long standing 'joke' that the Chinese will eat anything that moves so it isn't news that they eat dog but creating a festival to celebrate it, breeding dogs just for the festival, stealing pet dogs just for the festival is a step too far even for those who 'accept' that eating cats and dogs is maybe part of their culture. If the rest of the world's outrage is seen as an attack then so be it, this 'festival' needs to stop.

EATING of dog is about sentiments, mainly because dog is a likeable animal and most people love them.
What about those who eat cats, wild cats, monkeys?.
