Not every footballer is Clint Hill or Shaun Derry. The whole point of a well paid manager is to use some skills in management to manage a variety of people. In my opinion Redknapp totally failed to do that and just gave up on Phillips when it's been shown there was a very good player there in a position we were weak. No different really to other jobs. If you're a sales manager some of your staff will react well to praise while others will get complacent. Some will cower after a bollocking and some will try and show you they can do better.
Match context? Watch the goal again there is absolutely NO defending from the palace team at all. If we had a conceded a goal like that we would have been uproar on here! Yes he struck the ball well but come on that goal does not make him a 8-10 mill player does it? Or maybe it does and if it does then we should take the money and run!
]Not every footballer is Clint Hill or Shaun Derry. And praise The Lord for that!! I do get your point and it is true that for whatever reason some players click better with some managers than others; that said its a two way thing right and I do not care what issue a player may have with a manager, because when the manager selects him he has an obligation to the people who pay his wages to at least try to perform and not skulk around.
If Rory Mcilroy hadn't played gold for a few months it would take him a few rounds to get his eye in. Same goes for Phillips. Run in the team and he was one of the best players in the league over a 4 month period. Your focusing too much on one absolute worldy and criticising the defending for that to me suggest's you made your mind up about Phillips long ago and are too stubborn to admit you misjudged it You say defending for that goal and we'd be in uproar?! 40 yard shots are something i'd take all day
Bloody hell he has been elevated from one of the best rangers players to one of the best players in the league now!
He seemed to have a hand in about 80% of our goals from 1st Feb onwards I reckon. I'll describe his goal in your terms if you like. Phillips picks up the ball on the edge of the centre circle, the Palace players back off as he rifles in a 40 yard shot past Speroni. Sorry, still sounds pretty special to me.
I don't think you can accuse Phillips of not putting effort in in the past. I really just think he was poorly managed and not given the inspiration, for want of a better word, Redknapp should have given him. Just about every other manager he's worked under he's done very well with in his career.
No you numpty. The point was that even the world's best players need to play regularly to get to perform. He didn't get that run of games with that muppet Harry who didn't like the simple trick of playing players in their positions.
Yeah and of course if Matt Phillips himself thought he was even half as good as some think on here he would be breaking down CRs door demanding a transfer to a premiership club.
I'm confused by what your point is and what your disagreeing about. He cost us £5m so on the back of his absolute stand out run of form and with 2 years left on his contract we would be silly to sell him without making a profit. Do you disagree with that? We cant/ shouldn't sell all of our players and if he were to stay he would be a great asset and chip in with goals and assists. Do you disagree with that? I would say his comments to the media show he isn't an arsehole and has respect for Ramsey and the club so seems he isn't pushing for a transfer
What is now confusing me is with England keeper Rob Green, solid as rock Clint "Mr Commitment" Hill, all round genius and engine Joey Barton, League best XI Matty Phillips and second top English scorer Charles Austin how the **** we ended up relegated rock bottom.
