My memory must be playing tricks with me. I probably saw all of this blokes home games but could have sworn we bought him in 68/69 and not 69/70 when we were back in DIv 2. Just thinking about it it was probably Bobby Keetch who was centre half in 68/69. Crikey if any rangers fans think caulkers bad then you should have seen Keetch!
Mobley had the turning circle of an oil tanker and the mobility of the empire state building......he made Dunne look quick. You're right ROR it was probably Keetch and Hunt who were the CB's in 69, dynamic they weren't.......
Ron Hunt, of course, the very same who took out Dick Sheppard at Wembley. That rangers defence was so poor - think Allan Harris and Tony Hazell we're the FBs
Believe they were ROR......no wonder we only got 18 points and conceeded a shed load of goals including 8 at Old Trafford.
Sorry about the trip down memory lane! Definitely signed in the 69-70 season with Bill Shankly stating that now we've got Vic Mobley we are certainies to win the league! I think Tony Hazell played as one of the centre halves in the first division with Ian Watson at right back. Bobby Keetch was incredible to watch. The ball would be fifty yards away & suddenly the opposing centre forward was laying on the ground in agony. The Keetch had struck!
I thought Tony hazell played most of his matches as a left back, or is my memory playing up Did he start as a left back and then move to CD? Help Terry...cause he was my first great QPR love. Rodney was the glamour boy, but I always though Tony was much more QPR
Tony Hazell was a half-back he played on the opposite side of the pitch to Captain Mike Keen. Ian Watson was the left back I think.
Agree , he was exposed every game because of the shower he had around him I rekon , however if a big bid came I'd take the dosh
Beth, It wasn't until after the League Cup win that I became a Ranger (glory hunter!) & was the '69 relegation that really made me give my soul away! However, in the league cup win Tony Hazell was right back, having replaced Ian Watson in the side when he got an injury. Hazell then moved inside when Frank Sibley had one of his many injuries. Watson moved to left back (I think) in 69-70 when Dave Clement came on the scene. Going back to the League Cup winners, we basically lost Hunt & Sibley to injuries when they were both very young. The first division season might have been different if these two had been fully fit to play as our centre halves.
You make some very good points there but unfortunately I think he was flattered by having been part of the Spurs academy. I am not convinced that he has the necessary mental attributes to make a good centre half. If he did he would shine in a poorly performing team. He was disastrous last season and would have been dropped had it not been for the fact that this would have left us with a centre back pairing that had as much pace as a canal barge. If he had the maturity he would realise that a step down to the Championship would be a good move for him at this stage in his career but his off-field antics suggest that he lacks that self awareness. If we can get anywhere near the money Harold frittered away on him he should go. Can't see Bournemouth's fans welcoming this news though.
Cardiff fans seem to think he's **** too. Think he's overrated personally because he's quite quick and 'looks' like a footballer. He's an athlete. A very very poor man's Rio if you like.
To be fair to the Cardiff fans they said the same when we bought him a year ago. They were more gutted to see Mutch go. Mutch would have been brilliant to have now we're in the Championship, another Harold gaffe letting him go without ever playing him in his natural position.
I'm still not sure what that position is though. Is he another in our collection of number tens? Mutch, Fer, Taarabt, Hoilett, Vargas, Kranjcar all competing for a position which didn't exist in a 4-4-2
The guy is pony. Get rid and recoup whatever we can get for him. He isn't a first cousin of a footballer.
