Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys could take another South American off Sunderland’s hands by making a move for Santiago Vergini.

Sunderland are duty-bound to sign Vergini in a £2million permanent deal this summer after the defender made more than 20 appearances during a loan spell from Costa Rican outfit Sport Uruguay de Coronado last season.

Vergini faces a far more limited role under Advocaat than Poyet, with the one-year contract extension handed to Wes Brown further hinting towards the Argentine’s exit.

But while former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was a big fan of Vergini and was behind the Argentine international’s return to Wearside last summer, there are question marks over whether successor Dick Advocaat is quite so keen.

Advocaat dropped Vergini after Sunderland’s April capitulation against Crystal Palace and he featured from the bench just once during the final five games.

Means another defender to get in like
Think he's a useful backup but that's what JOS and Brown should be used for now

I hope you are right but I for one am sad to see Santi shipped out as I think he could be immense, but probably not for us, at the moment it has to be said that we are not strong enough as a team to accommodate developing players and I worry about Watty falling into this category, we will see.

On what basis do you think he could develop into a immense player?

Probably the glimpses genius he's shown. His technique is sublime, a proper south american ball playing CB, just looks like the pace turns him to jelly. Shame, but he doesn't look anywhere near close to adapting.

On his earlier performances I'd agree with him. Vergini had some very good games for us. Most people have forgotten them and only remember the more recent times he was poor.... But then I'm not most people!!

Others have been as bad (worse?) than Santi. Least of all Defoe who couldn't trap a bag of cement for the last 4 games, but then what do I know!

He's probably the weakest defender I've seen in a Sunderland shirt. He's slow, positionally poor, and turns whoever is alongside him to ****.

Our 2 biggest defeats of the season, 8-0 saints, 4-1 palace. Who playing a starring role in both of them?

Maybe a negative out look only see negative things with certain players, we all fall into that category at some point. I see nothing good about Connor, The only good game I saw him play well in last season was Stoke at home, and he turned Bardo inside out, Bardo. Who I also think is pretty ****, many agree with me but many don't even high up people at the club.

I see Vergini and I see a very good defender who's developed the fear. I don't want us to sign him I think of the two lads on loan that season who struggled at the back it's defo Coates who'll come good. But I can see how good he'll be in the right league. Newells want him. A team with more technique in their goalies little fingers then we have in our entire squad. He'll fit in well there. Here? Na, the games to quick and there's to many different styles of play, he's lost. Seeing him trying to work out how to deal with his marker running the channels against palace was pretty funny and showed he just didn't get some of the tactic being deployed in the league.

Weakest CB in a sunderland shirt I've seen? Probably Anton Ferdinand or Phil Babb.
