Prix Du Jockey Club- 2.45 Chantilly Sumbal 9/1 Andrea Atzeni sounds very excited by this colt as do Qatar racing, who were considering Epsom. Drawn in gate 5, I think the horse should be able to get a prime postion and then it is up to Atzeni whether he wants to take a lead into the race or not. The horse has won by 5 lengths from a Godolphin/Fabre horse Untold Secret, by 5 lengths, who was mooted as a potential Derby runner for the boys in blue before Sumbal hammered him for a second time. He hasn't raced in a big field yet but seems uncomplicated and can therefore make the most of the low draw, whilst the two market leaders are in gates 12 and 13 respectively. The horse has enough tactical speed (son of Danehill Dancer) but has stamina stacked on the dam side (Alix Road- who was 5th in the Group1 Prix Diane at Chantilly herself and was 2nd at the course on her other start) so has a lovely combination of speed and stamina in the pedigree, which has been shown in three starts already. I am hoping he is ridden positively, in a similar manner to French Guineas winner Make Believe.

Another very, very interesting one today, in addition to the above rick, runs at Kilbeggan. Kilbeggan 3.50 DUCKWEED 4/1 Readers may recall me putting up Mr Boss Man last Monday who won by a very easy 8l. A horse I cited in my write up was Duckweed who previously beat Mr Boss Man so the form has taken a boost. Despite the fact the Monday evening maiden 'the Boss' won was a very weak affair (which is why I liked him so strongly) he literally couldn't have done it any easier having been heavily eased. Today's race DUCKWEED finds herself in is a mares race which wouldn't take a huge amount of winning. The one that tempers the enthusiasm somewhat is the jolly coming from the Mullin's yard, but she's been off the track for a long while and I suspect she may just need it. If she is fully primed I think I'm probably beat as Mullins mare looks a bit classier than the selection but DUCKWEED is a decent mare whose still improving. The drop in trip isn't hugely worrying as even though it was a 3m race she won previously it was won with a lovely turn of foot where she settled it in a few strides. I'm hopeful DUCKWEED takes this in the manner of a decent mare onto better things.

Here's what Willie says about his mare in this one Beefy; "Daisy’s Gift (Ruby) runs in the 2m 3f mares’ hurdle. She had a few small problems after winning her maiden hurdle at Killarney last July but she has strengthened up well in the interim. She has her chance but the lack of a recent run is not to her advantage." It can prove costly to ever go against a Mullins favourite but the lack of a recent run in soft ground may be to Duckweeds advantage here.
In the Prix Du Jockey Club, the two favourites Karaktar and New Bay have not been done any favours by their wide draws. I will be interested to see how Cape Clear Island goes in a first time visor because his performances on these shores this term do not suggest that he is top draw. Highland Reel is something of an unknown after disappointing on his seasonal bow; however, the one that interests me the most is Jean-Claude Rouget’s grey War Dispatch, one of three unbeaten colts in the race (Sumbal and Silverware the others).
Quite what the **** Atzeni is doing on Sumbal from a great draw is beggars belief. Ran on again after being placed behind a wall of horses. Had he have made use of him he would have gone close
Have simply had to have an each-way crack at Veauce De Sivola in a 0-100 at Fakenham 3pm. This horse is a bit quirky but I am convinced he is being laid out for something because they have been experimenting with him in small field races, which doesn't suit him at all.The better pace today should give him something to aim at and he is so well handicapped if he puts in a true run it is ridiculous. 16/1 I've taken
I cannot say that I was too impressed with the Prix Du Jockey Club. Clearly the wide draw proved to be no obstacle to the winner New Bay as he was just switched off at the back and brought steadily through to throw down his challenge in the last furlong. He could be one of those Andre Fabre horses that will probably only have a couple more races before lining up in October for the big one. The favourite was a big disappointment. My choice, War Dispatch, stuck to his inside draw and was never going to get through the wall of horses in front of him even if he had been good enough. Cape Clear Island clearly did not take to the visor as he dropped tamely back through the field long before they got to the business end of the race. I expect that the runner-up Highland Reel will be returning to Longchamp in July for the Grand Prix de Paris as he has the stamina in his pedigree to have a shot at the Arc course and distance.
