Just read an article about Spurs in which "Arry" bemoans the fact that he may have to sell Modric when Liverpool are showing their ambitions by going after the likes of Downing.............but the point he makes is this............

"They are getting in players to go above us so even hanging on to sixth place will be difficult".

Set me thinking..........a lot of people don't like Arry but he can judge all things football from 5 miles so he clearly thinks Liverpool are going places.

Thing is Liverpool were ghastly early last season , even with most of their squad playing..........then they came good. AC was signed for big bucks with the Torres ( who cost them £20m) cash but they did bring other players in who did make a post-January difference.........they still never achieved CL though.

We played them towards the end of the season and we were crap..........limp in attack and dreadful early goals..............

But with our new signings and hopefully another couple coming in ( pray for a striker)..........we should be pressing for a top 6 place like Liverpool or Spurs. We were robbed by a late Lennon goal against a full Spurs side so I see nothing to fear from them.

We struggled to press on late last season with a weak attack and with this being replaced ( sorry Shola the Legend).............I can see us doing great things.

All I hear from AP is "hope we can improve as a side"......zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Europe should be our aim. Nothing else.

    sig says it all

when he was at west ham - nowt and he started their financial woes then left
portsmouth - crippled them (but won a cup)
southampton - pretty much bankrupted them also

i think this is the first transfer window he hasnt splashed the cash, cos i think spuds have told him they have to sell before he can spend - this will show his true colours this season.

i am glad he didnt come up here - that was because he was told he had 2 bob to spend

you might guess from my comments hes not my favourite manager :emoticon-0100-smile

Europe? Are you mad? We're nowhere near the level of Liverpool or Spurs. The big difference being consistency and strength in depth. They go hand in hand and I can scan over the three squads and safely say we're well behind these two clubs. Our aim should be top 10.

    This.

Its good having a target but an unachievable demotivating target is no good. Top 10 with a good cup run and I will be happy. Build on it the following season and top 7 should be possible with the RIGHT signings and no changes in terms of management.

Top half and consolidation, dreams are fine but don't lose sight of reality.

To me, this is why opposition fans find it so easy to attack us and call us deluded, we have a good return to the league and all of a sudden certain people are calling for Top 6, it's madness.

It's not lack of ambition, it's realism. We're not playing the same sides we were last season, everyone's improving (including us). Our target last season was to stay up and I for one was extremely happy with where we finished because I had a realistic expectation. If we go ahead and shout about a Top 6 finish in our 2nd season back in the Premier League then I fear you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Top 10 for me and anything else is a bonus.

Yep - so it's true some of our fans are delusional ;-)

But in all seriousness, Liverpool still managed to finish above us despite a very poor start last season, and since Jan they've spent about £80m+ or so on improving the squad.

We have lost Carroll and Nolan and only brought in a couple of decent players with the proceeds. True, having Ben Arfa back will be a big boost, but I reckon top 10 is a reasonable aim for this season.

If you want to be seriosuly optimistic, let's say 8th.

It isn't impossible, though sure won't be easy. 10th would be satisfactory for this season but kind of dsappointing for next.

6th ? Perhaps a target for 2013/14 season if things go well

Top 10 maybe sneak into Europe with a cup or if it goes down to 7th we have a chance there. Top 6 = well out of reach.

I'm in broad agreement with this post..................but what can AP do to get us top6?......................Is it 100% to do with CL cash?

Note I said following season top 7... theres my ambition. Need I remind you we just got promoted and your expecting us to be a top 6/7 side this season. Come on... I am being realistic with my ambitions. Progress over 3-5 seasons is all we want.

I agree with most of ppls responses here...we were very close to getting 9th place last season but who can remember a crazy season like that?!
The table was ridiculously close for 80% of the season.
I do think we had alot of unlucky results last season, SAFC away, Spurs...etc...but I believe this is why Pards is talking about our goal for next season to be having a higher level of consistency...we know we play good football, its just about not losing concentration and conceding stupid goals.

Top ten would be great, 8th is my most optimistic because, as mentioned above, the squads of the teams in the top 6/7 have much more depth then us...ATM! Especially if (and i believe this will happen this season) Pards go for it in one of the cups

I'd be happy with a top 10 finish.
being in the top six is very unrealistic, man utd, chelsea ,city, spurs, arsenal and liverpool have a better team than us.
However, any position that isnt in the top six is going to be to difficult to predict. Some teams have improved, us and sunderland while other teams mainly villa have weakened.

I think our target is 7th - 10th like others have mentioned any teams outside the top 6 has a decent chance of finishing in the Top 10 teams that I expect to be around us the season coming. Stoke, Everton, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Fulham, Bolton

All those teams have a chance of finishing 7th so this should be our goal too. Finishing 7th - 10th would make me ecstatic!!
