Sebastian Coates would be open to staying at Sunderland if they make a permanent move for the Liverpool defender this summer. #SAFC #LFC

Sebastian Coates would be open to staying at Sunderland if the Black Cats launch a permanent move for the Liverpool defender this summer.

On-loan Liverpool centre-half Coates has proved to be a revelation over the last five games, with the Uruguayan again colossal in Wednesday’s draw at Arsenal which secured Sunderland’s Premier League survival.

"It’s good to play and to show what I can do after the manager has had confidence in me"

That has suddenly raised the issue of Coates’ future at the Stadium of Light and whether the Black Cats will aim to keep hold of the 24-year-old, rather than simply let him return to Liverpool.

Coates only has 12 months remaining on his contract at Anfield and Liverpool are thought to be prepared to get him off the books this summer for a fraction of the £7million they invested three years ago.

And while Coates admits he is unsure of what the summer holds after no contact yet with Liverpool over his position, he would be prepared to stay at Sunderland after playing a key part in beating the drop.

“Yes, it’s something I’d consider if it became a possibility,” he said. “I don’t know what is going to happen yet, I have to go back to Liverpool and then we’ll see.

“It’s good to play and to show what I can do after the manager has had confidence in me.

“Every player needs games and sometimes that’s the key.”

Coates was part of a Sunderland defensive line that showed dogged determination at Arsenal to grind out the stalemate which was sufficient for the Black Cats to be mathematically sure of Premier League football.

That ensured Sunderland avoid the tension-filled scenario of heading into this Sunday’s final game of the season at Premier League champions Chelsea needing to get a positive result, with Hull and Newcastle now the remaining two teams fighting to avoid the last relegation spot.

Coates said: “We suffered at the end at Arsenal because they played very well.

“But we knew we needed a point and now we can enjoy the final day at Chelsea."

    -------------------------------------------------------

Last year of his contract, possibly available for a £1-2m
Seen him at his worst and at his best
    Worth a punt?

Hopefully it will be bye bye Brown and Vergini, we'd be stupid to think we'll have the budget for two bug signing centrebacks so 2m on coates looks sensible, we'd still need an injection of quality at CB though

Agree but I'm sure we are signing Vergini on a free because of staying up now...

    http://www.football365.com/premier-...-up?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

The 26-year-old Argentine returned to the Stadium of Light on a season-long loan deal from Costa Rican side Sport Uruguay de Coronado in August last year and has made 35 appearances this season, the last of them a start in Sunday's 1-0 derby victory over Newcastle.

The win took the Black Cats three points clear of the relegation zone in 15th place and if they survive the drop under new head coach Dick Advocaat it could have significant consequences for Vergini.

He told the Sunderland Echo: "In the contract, it is written that if we stay in the Premier League, I can stay here for another two years. I feel very comfortable here, both at the club and outside the club, so I would be very keen to stay.

"The only downside is the climate and the weather, but even that has been good for the last few days.

"It has been very good to play regularly and I am very happy. I think with time, I have been able to adapt more to the style of play and also to my team-mates.

"Apart from the struggles we are going through in the league, I have felt very comfortable."

Vergini now wants Sunderland to build on their victory over the Magpies when they host Crystal Palace on Saturday.

He said: "Every win brings with it a lot of confidence and with a derby game, that is even more the case. In our next game, we need to show the same character and the same spirit as we did on Sunday."

Written well over a month ago

He didn't look happy at full time did you see him? Dick doesn't favour him. Maybe we can rip that contract up? Mutual termination. Vergini ain't happy though. You could see he didn't give a **** when we stayed up.

    Quotes are there though

Tbf I didnt see him after the game so didnt see what he was like

However he knows JOS is coming to the end of his career and won't be playing every game
    Jones is injury prone
So he will get games at CB or RB
Plus couldnt exactly drop Coates the form he was in

We've seen enough in the last 3 games to know there is the ability to be top, top class in him, I'd buy him, 100%/

He was incredible v Arsenal, absolutely superb, he's incredibly rated in Uruguay, a country that's had Lugano, Godin, Perreira etc in the last few years, just buy him.

We need a bit more of a footballer alongside him, move Rodwell, or look at van Dijk, or Veltman from Ajax.

I'm saying Dutch cos I think that's what Dick will do (if here...)

We could have shot ourselves in the foot again because of this wretched loan system, we developed Welbeck and Evans for ManU and with the weaknesses in LFC's defence they may want to keep him since we /he has shown what he is capable of.

Nobody has mentioned his awful injury record... Decent player no doubt but a big risk also. Don't think I'd want us to splash more than 2 or 3m on him personally.

Probably because it's of not awful. He did his cruciate ligament, had an op and had no recurrence. In fact looking at his injury history, the hamstring injury(which also hasn't recurred) that kept him out 6 games this season is his only other major injury. I wouldn't worry 2 injurys at 24 is nowt.

That was one of the best defensive performances I've ever seen from a player in a sunderland shirt against arsenal. He was like a human brick wall.
If he can keep that up then it's a no brainer.

We need 3 centerbacks so if we could get Coates for a couple of million I'd bring him in. I know not everyone agrees but Curtis Davies for £1-2m would be a good deal for us. Then if the Van Djik rumours are true I'd use Fletcher as a makeweight to reduce the fee.

I quite like the sound of that particularly as you`ve actually managed to find a use for Fletcher.
