Interesting point. I'd say it's more that their fans and chairman have expectations beyond their capabilities. This is why you see some of their fans making wild claims at the start of each season and why the chairman often dispenses with his managers when it all comes to ****.
Spurs fans do appear to be quite level-headed, at least the ones on this site do. Having ambition is not to be confused with delusion. I don't think Spurs fans "expect" their side to win, like Liverpool fans do, or United fans do. One day, they'll manage to get the right mix of board, staff, manager and players to give the title a real shot. On their day, they are one of those sides that can beat any team.
i wonder what wild claims will be made by Hiag before the start of next season ? take your pick from : Spurs will finish above Arsenal.......... Spurs will win the league............. Spurs will never sell Kane........... Spurs won't sack Poch........... The Power Shift is happening/started but Hiag still hasn't made his mind up about wether it has.................
Right, I'll take each of these in turn. You won't catch me running away from the truth, like PISKIE often does. Yes, I probably will predict that Spurs will finish above Arsenal next season, as I have done for the past three seasons. We've not only made up a considerable gap on Arsenal over the last decade, but we're maintaining that gap, and not moving away to any significant degree. It is only a matter of time before we do finish above Arsenal. Nah, I've never said that. Sure, we have the same chance as every other team in the Prem to win the title, but only a fool would expect this Spurs team to win. I do believe that, should we get the right set-up, we have the ability to challenge for the title, but winning it is another thing entirely, and, in any event, we're not even close at the moment. No one can say "never." But I certainly do believe that we won't be selling Kane next season. If he has another cracking season and someone like Real or PSG come in for him with an offer of £80 million, then I think we'd struggle to hold on to him, what with the building of our new stadium to finance. As I say above, you can never say "never." For me, the jury is still out on Poch. I didn't want him in the club, going on record early as saying that I would rather have had Koeman. Of the two I think he's done the best, especially given the fact that, at the start of the season, even professional pundits were predicting that Saints would get relegated. To do what he's done with the cards he was dealt with is, in my opinion, nothing short of incredible. As for Poch, he has been a pleasant surprise for me. I can see what he's trying to do, and he has exposed the many weaknesses that we have in our squad. It's takes a very good tactical manager to do that. Hopefully, our board will now support Poch by allowing him to undertake the shake-up that our squad clearly requires. If Poch can get the players that he wants and needs, I think he can improve us. I cannot say whether or not the fabled Power-Shift has happened or is happening as we speak. As you know, I remain uncertain on that point. But many believe that we are in the process of a shift, and I must respect their right to hold that opinion. Given that this is a debate that is clearly going to be raging for quite some while, it is only fair that I continue to provide a platform for informed debate.
I am up for it - HIAG can't help making posts that come back to bite him. Can u start a thread so we can bookmark all of them so we can all have a laugh at end of season or when failed post bites him (whatever happens first)
You could have a sweepstake on when in the season his comments and threads will come back to haunt him. Some of them this season were instantaneous, like the day he wrote the 'Arsenal are an embarrassment to English clubs' thread, a couple of hours before the Spuds got dumped out of the Europey cup Others were slow burners, like the prediction that Arsenal would finish 7th or the one 'this season there will be no St totteringham's day' You could devise a points system and run it a bit like a prediction league. There would be plenty of material for participants to score points from
Is this the sort of thing HiAg would say... "Chavs won this title scoring the least goals in PL history"
I'm not sure that I'd take any of spurs players tbh. Loris, eriksen and Kane are the obvious ones but would I have them at Arsenal? Loris is a quality keeper but I feel like he has the odd mistake in him, I'd rather go for Cech though I suppose that's unlikely. Maybe I'd take Lloris to compete with Szcz but I'm not sure, only if certain other options weren't available. Eriksen is a no as we have much better in ozil and Cazorla with wilshere, rosicky, Ramsey,Sanchez all able to play in the number ten role. And Kane while I would take him for competition with Giroud I think I'd prefer a different type of striker with some pace and trickery than another target man type striker. So again it's a 50/50 based on who else was available. That's it though, wouldn't touch the rest of the squad
Sanchez could have joined any of the fake success money bags clubs. But instead he chose to play for a proper club with history and who have earned their success.
