BRISTOL CITY: Fantastic team spirit was key to our success - Steve Cotterill

Bristol City celebrate their League One title triumph at Ashton Gate following the 8-2 trouncing of Walsall.

STEVE Cotterill has spoken of the special bond that exists within the Bristol City dressing room.

At the end of a season in which the Robins won a League One championship and Johnstone's Paint Trophy double, City's manager highlighted "team spirit" as the biggest single factor behind the his squad's success.

And he listed the generosity of spirit that has characterised this most successful of campaigns as the most pleasing factor for him personally.

Asked if he will take any special memories away with him during the summer recess, Cotterill answered: "Their spirit. I love how they are when they are all together."

He said: "They give to one another and there are no takers in the dressing room.
"They all give to each other and, because I'm a giver, I respond to things like that and it makes me want to do even more for them.

"I like givers in this world and these lads do go the extra yard for one another.
"They will do that no matter what the situation, whether they are covering up for a team-mate if I ask them something or whether it is going the extra yard out on the football pitch for me, for the club and for the supporters.

"I love being in charge of them and they are a great bunch of lads.
"They have a fantastic spirit and that has probably given me more pleasure than anything else this season."

Cotterill has made no secret of his desire to strengthen a squad that is currently short on numbers, but he is
aware of the importance of recruiting players who can fit harmoniously into what is a tight-knit group.

Assiduous when it comes to doing his homework on potential transfer targets, Cotterill will make a careful assessment of character before committing himself to any deals

He said: "If we do make a mistake and bring in someone who does not fit in, he will have to go, it's as simple as that.
"If I don't sort out their character quickly, then the lads will do it themselves, don't worry about that.

"They have to be as one if they are going to achieve anything as a team. You don't win what we have won this season without having a set way of playing and a team spirit. Those are vital ingredients."

Team spirit is however only part of the equation for success. I feel the key ingredients are the technical ability of the players and the planning and organisation of the individuals into a team environment. That is probably why JET has left as he was a luxury who had to be accommodated whereas the rest are team players

Almost a certainty that is the reason why that (so called) defender that we signed from Brighton was shipped out to Bury.
