It costs £500 to run as a parliamentary candidate, and you get that deposit back if you poll at least 5% of the vote. The Liberal Democrat party just lost £169,000 last night - they lost their deposit in 338 constituencies.
Voted Labour (more for local reasons), but think the Tories are a safer pair of hands. Hopefully Labour move closer to the centre in 2020 and have more plausible economic policies.
Good point . I voted Labour , but in all honesty ( IMHO ) we are like the USA . 2 Big parties , but when all is said and done , not really that much difference ( sadly ) . Big Business calls the shots , and while we have labour leaders that are out of touch with the working man , it will stay the same .
*EU, we'll remain in Europe! We'll vote to stay in a referendum anyway as the status quo always scaremongers like in Scotland.
I've said it before, but political discussion on here is a waste of time. I stopped visiting for a month or so because it was so tedious. No-one is going to change their minds so you just end up with people effectively boasting about who they support. Tories will tell you that Labour are going to destroy the economy (despite a pretty good Labour run until 2007/8) Labourites will tell you the Tories are going to dismantle the NHS (despite it still being in existence after five years of evil Tory rule) Liberals will tell you that everyone else is too extreme (despite the fact that once they had power they had to compromise their principles) SNPers will tell you they need independence to blossom (despite the fact that Westminster gave them a free and fair vote and Scotland said "no") Ukippers just blame it on immigrants (despite, well, you know the rest) Lots of heat, no light. Nothing at all constructive, Then the election actually happens and the losers start to attack the voting system. I've seen it all before and it's all very dull indeed. It's even more dull after the vote (free and fair) has been held. Why not stop now and just move on? Vin
Jim Murphy, the Scottish Labour leader, turned up in Glasgow this week with Eddie Izzard - in drag. How are we supposed to take that seriously - it was a disgrace - his accessories didn`t match his frock.
The people have spoken in a fair and democratic election....The only criticism that could be aimed at it is if you believe in proportional representation. If that method was used UKIP would have more seats and the SNP would have fewer...basically the government would be even more right wing. Elections in this country can't be called unfair because you don't like the result...for really unfair elections you should visit practically every country outside Europe.
Well: No-one was intimidated out of, or into, voting No ballot boxes were stuffed No ballot boxes "went missing" Counts were held in the open and under constant scrutiny The electoral roll didn't contain fictitious names No-one was murdered for voting Voting was secret And, if anything on that list did occur, there would be a serious investigation under British law. Apart from that, probably not very fair at all. I haven't read any of your posts on this thread (I genuinely haven't read this thread for reasons I've made abundantly clear) but can I assume that your question is based upon a "fair" election being one that results in the government you would have preferred? Vin
While it's open season on subjects that are normally banned on this forum, I have a question. What kind of idiotic twat believes in God? Vin
I do agree Fran, except that if we had PR, there would be no need for tactical voting and people would be more likely to vote for the party that best represented their interests. So there would be more UKIP seats, but also more Greens, and possibly a BNP or two. The problem with FPTP is that the people who vote for the losing candidates are left completely unrepresented, and once again we have a government who only around 30% of the people who bothered to vote chose. Whoever won this election, that would still be unfair, any way you look at it. Of course I know that far worse happens in many other countries, but that doesn't stop me wanting a better system in this one.
