I'm working on a one-off fanzine to mark ten years since our back-to-back promotions to the Championship. As part of that, I'm looking to highlight the best 10 games of the past decade, and I'd like to get more of a consensus from you guys, rather than just publishing my own favourites. So, aside from obvious ones like the play off semi second leg, the final, the first Emirates visit etc, what nostalgic moments would you put forward?
Arsenal 1-2 Hull City. Done. At the time we were the longest odds ever offered on a single Premier League match at 23/1. Arsenal had only ever previously lost once at The Emirates. Oh, just noticed you said not the obvious Emirates one but why? It is easily the best game, you cant just ignore it. My other best are both in Sheffield, 2-4 at Hullsborough and 3-2 at Bramall Lane. I have never in over 35 years of watching City walked away from a game so elated after a defeat. It was a wonderful game and our fans were extraordinary that day.
Apr 15, 2008. Barnsley away, won 3-1. At the time the best football I'd seen City play in years. Both Watford games in the 2007/08 playoffs. Sep 27, 2008, beating Arsenal away.
West Brom 3-0 away win. The Wednesday win was in 2004, but if that's okay then I'd include the 6-1 against Tranmere as well.
The Sheff Wed game was 10 seasons ago, thought that probably doesn't count. There's a quite a few from more recent years. I remember a good one beating Watford 3-2 with us going behind twice and Koren scoring the winner in the 93rd minute. Another one I remember enjoying was a 2-1 win over Boro in the pissing rain. Josh King tore the Boro defence a new one and Fryatt scored a late winner. A couple from the 2013 promotion season - 3-1 win over Bolton (Quinniesta scoring on his debut hours after he signed for us), 5-2 vs Birmingham, both the 3-2 and 2-0 wins vs Leeds. The 2-0 win over Leeds in particular was a brilliant performance, we should've won by a lot more. The 5-1 win over Scunthorpe is always a good one anarl. Of course there are the obvious ones as well, such as the playoffs, Arsenal, Spurs, Sheff Utd et al.
Mine revolve mainly around the 2007/8 season as that was my last one before moving. The games which stick out for me are, as Plum suggests the Watford second leg, but also the Southampton home game in March when we won 5-0, and i think it was that game that it started to hit home that just maybe we could actually have a chance of going up out of the Championship. I am sure after that game the band wagon well and truly got going and we went from something like 16,000 crowds to not having many home seats available at all.
Beating Palace at home in the first promotion season, when Ash scored a header towards the end it was the first moment I genuinely believed we had a chance of playing top flight football.
Agree with all of them. The Watford 3-2 was particularly enjoyable because they were so bloody negative and we really struggled to break them down, but had the last laugh with Koren's goal. Very similar to that was QPR at the KC in early 2007 when Elliott came off the bench to win it for us from 2-1 down. Another pisspoor anti football opposition which was brilliant to beat with late goals. Also 10-man Leicester at home under Barmby when NP had just jumped ship back to them. We didn't know about the problems with the owners then and were pissed off at him for leaving to a lesser side with more money. Another late Koren winner. Koren used to absolutely do my head in at times, but he had a knack for decisive goals.
Completely forgot about the DQPR match. Feel ashamed at that. I had considered putting the Leicester match, but didn't want to risk having the thread disrupted by AKCJ, because he just would.
I did. I said all along on here from the moment it happened that it was 100% to do with Adam buying Hull FC so he was obviously leaving and Pearson not wanting to deal with the Allams direct.
Stuart Elliott brace against QPR, snatching victory from defeat. Fulham. Both 2-1 in 2008 and 6-0 last season. The Southampton 5-0 win in 07/08. It exorcised the 4-0 away defeat and gave the fans massive belief going into the end of the season.
