This is one of the reasons why they are needed.

Nearly 30 years ago, (11th may) this tragedy happened, and is forgotten by a lot of folks...especially as all we hear about is the other tragedies...you know the one.

    56 died, and hundreds injured.

    grim viewing.

That poor fella engulfed in flames!! Either totally oblivious to the fact he was on fire or resigned to his fate. It almost makes me cry every time I watch that bit, brings dryness to my throat. He didn't survive if I remember correctly. A lot of heroes that day, police and fans! Most died because they went for the exits only to find them locked. If everyone went for the pitch most would have survived, despite the speed of the inferno.

You would think that someone would have been pulled up for it by now like, but then again...

2 bits in the film will forever haunt me, the copper with his hair on fire and that poor bloke.

Apologies for the intrusion chaps, long time lurker and on the wrong board - my board has about as much atmosphere as the stadium!

If I was to burn down my stadium for financial gain I'd like to think that I would do it during the night whilst nobody was about and not whilst it was full to the brim during a televised game! A night time deed would have been more suspicious and fingers would have more likely to have been pointed at the chairman. So to do it during a match so that suspicion would have been less likely to fall on his shoulders??? That just seems unlikely to me!

Shhh, I'm in disguise, I only joined on Tuesday, I don't know what you're on about... :bandit:

Was going to say I'll miss the banter of the derbies when we go down, but after 5 in a row, even that isn't any funny anymore...

There were quite a few stadium tragedies in the 80's and I think some forget (or don't realise) as we only really get one played out in the media on a regular basis (which was also obviously sad and horrific). This one is more shocking in many ways as the footage is clear, fast and brutal. I didn't watch past about 2 minutes as I have memories of the last half of it. Truly sad, they only went to watch the football.

I remember that day, we played Ipswich (but we were already relegated) were a goal up but lost and they stayed up and Norwich went down. I was in the house wood working at the time and watched on the BBC I think, of it unfolding, Roker park's two main stands were made mostly of wood and I am glad we moved after that day. Heyscel ? in Brussells was about 10 days later. 1985 was the worst year in my life, including the 3-1 defeat at Newcastle stuck in their ground afterwards, the league cup final loss I went and nearly got crushed as the unofficial gate was 101,000 and it must have been, I got turned away from the next home game (Chelsea) because it was all ticket, our dog got knocked down, we lost at home to Villa 0-4 3 days later and I thought, Jesus what next.

That's one day I don't want to relive again, so I'll pass on any video links attached.

It's still firmly imprinted in my mind. To watch a poor soul on fire was just horrendous and the commentators horror in his voice at the sight. Not something I'll ever forget.
