Newcastle United have short-listed Real Madrid first-team coach Paul Clement as a contender for the head coach’s position at St James’ Parkafter being turned down by Derby County’s Steve McClaren.

With current interim head coach John Carver severely damaging his prospects of being appointed on a full-time basis following a run of eight successive defeats that have left the club battling for Premier League survival, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley are now attempting to identify new candidates to take the helm at the club

And Ashley is understood to be keen to speak to Clement, who is expected to leave his role as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant this summer in order to pursue a career in management.

Real manager Ancelotti, whose own position at the Bernabeu is likely to rest on the club’s attempt to retain the Champions League title this season, has made it clear to Clement, 43, that he remains a key member of his backroom staff having appointed him to his team at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real.

But with Ashley determined to appoint a head coach at St James’s, Clement’s growing reputation on the training pitch has seen the Newcastle owner identify the Londoner as being able to the step up to the top job in a similar fashion to McClaren’s move to Middlesbrough after working as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United.

While Clement is keen to progress into the management, however, he will not consider his future and prospective options until the end of Real’s campaign, which could conclude with a Champions League final appearance in Berlin next month..

Newcastle’s north-east rivals Sunderland are also interested in speaking to Clement, who worked closely with the club’s director of football, Lee Congerton, while coaching at Chelsea under Ancelotti.

With Dick Advocaat expected to leave the Stadium of Light this summer following his brief stint as manager, Sunderland want to appoint a coach willing to accept a structure that would see him work closely with Congerton on player recruitment.

Clement is also a leading contender for the Queens Park Rangers job, with owner Tony Fernandes failing in an attempt to persuade him to move to Loftus Road following the departure of Harry Redknapp earlier this year.

Paul Clement would represent a good appointment for me, I would like us to unearth good coaching talent than appoint average or stale options. Clement is untried as a head coach or manager but has the character and the stones to manage an ego or 26 and has worked at the very top.

Paul Clement might be a good manager, but then again he's just a well respected assistant who is unproven. He might be the next Jose Mourinho, or he might be another John Carver. A complete gamble in my honest opinion.

    Charnley's just getting confused again.

He's actually making enquiries as to the whereabouts of Dick Clements, not Paul Clements, as he heard that he has a couple of likely lads.

Nothing to suggest he'd be a success as a Manager, if its a Manager what you want.
As a Head Coach with no say on transfers etc, perhaps, but, it wouldn't be any different to the current Management Structure that most fans cant abide.

    I rate him.
He has more pedigree than the likes of Sherwood and Monk.
He will have some bullish contacts too.

Exactly. Have heard him speak a fair few times. This guy is seriously switched on. Hence, will stick two fingers up at working for Ashley.

If Ashley dangles enough money at him by way of a salary and a promise of transfer funds then why the hell not (assuming we're still in the PL of course)?

Despite our current failings we are still an attractive option in my opinion. A lot needs to change though before he would even consider it I feel. We need the staff (backroom and playing) and resources to be challenging in the top 10 regularly whilst also competing (not just turning up) in the domestic cups at the very least.

To pinch a line from the minutes of the fans forum on the 2nd March this is what they had to say on a potential new manager/head coach/arse kisser..call it what you will.

"The board would look for an individual who would fit into the club's structure, someone who is tactically astute, and who has a track record of developing young players and the ability to improve players"

Carver only meets one of those things (the first one) so if that's our criteria then I'd be ****ting me pants if I was JC.

With any luck we stay in the PL, and the summer period sees a real good clear out of some of the dead wood...something along the lines of (at the very least) :-

    Elliot
    Raylor
    Willo
    Ameobi
    Gouffran
    Marveaux
    Obertan
    Riviere
    Carver
    Stone
    Charnley

Nice idea and just the sort of (potential) manager we should have been in for from the get go. The entire organization require root and branch surgery..philosophically as well as practically. A manager that has a long term vision, and modern progressive methods and techniques.. ie a good young forward looking manager .. And Clement fits that bill well

..but I cannot fathom someone wanting to come and work for the all time winner of the Ryan Airs lifetime achievement award to shambolic cost cutting and cheap tat that is Ashleys NUFC.

Say what you want about the goblin, but JC is cheap and tatty and hence viewed as an invaluable asset by that grey faced spunk bubble Charnley
