Multiple question thread. Anyone still in a union? Do they hold much if any power, and do you agree with them. Does anyone go to the Durham miners gala? THE leaders of two of Britain’s biggest trade unions will be among speakers at this year’s Durham Miners’ Gala. The general secretaries of Unite, Len McCluskey, and UCATT, Steve Murphy, are among those who will address crowds at Durham Racecourse on Saturday, July 11. Durham Miners’ Association secretary Dave Hopper will open the proceedings at about 1pm and introduce speeches from Guardian columnist Owen Jones, NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates, Fire Brigades’ Union general secretary Matt Wrack and ASLEF president Tosh McDonald. One person who will not be attending though is Ed Miliband after organisers decided not to invite the Labour leader, who last spoke at the event in 2012. http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/...-top-the-bill-at-durham-miners-gala-1-7246015
Yeh I'm still in the union and there's thousands go to the miners gala.the unions are only there for your legal side they have no clout.
I'm a union rep for Unison in the NHS - Granda was a miner so am a big believer in the unions - The Unions hold a bit of sway to be fair (for now) in the NHS but Milliband is also not really pro-union either and I think we're struggling to attract new members. It appears that the only time people join the union is when they need something and, often, it's already too late. sadly I'll be laid up recovering from an operation when the Gala is on - bit gutted really as I love the miners gala in Durham
I'm in the NHS and a unison member. Need to protect our unions as they are the only thing stopping a tory government returning us to serfdom. Haven't been to the Gala for years but plan on going this year.
I am in Unite but unions are losing any "power" that they had (along with any rights that workers had) - it gives me access to legal representation, well at least until the laws protecting workers are further eroded/abolished. As Bumble says there could well come a time where surfdom is back and until some of these people who have been given the vote realise there is more to life than appeasing business this will continue on a downward spiral. The gala at Durham is one of the best days of the year and I go every year. My personal favorite speaker is Dennis Skinner he calls a spade a spade and is not full of s**t like most of the other gobs**tes in parliment. The problem is I think a speaker can only be invited every 2 years so he doesn't get there annually.
im in the nhs and need to join the union i just keep forgetting got all the stuff to apply for unison though
I'm in the GMB union, and to be honest they are more there for legal protection in disciplinary matters and wage negotiations than anything else these days, although I have been on a couple of one day strikes this year as a protest against wage caps..This didn't go down to well with some in the higher management with me being a manager myself, but for me it was a matter of principles coming first..
I'm in Solidarity. Wouldn't have **** all to do with any union affiliated to the TUC. A bunch of ****ing ****s in bed with the management who don't give a toss about their members. Like that ****er Hopper. I'd give him his ****ing banner back & strangle the fat bastard with it.
Any of you NHS people working for NECS? @Jackerini @Bumblebore (Agree totally with @Billy Cattermole about Hopper mind - the bloke is a ****)
im still in the GMB used to be a very active member at one time. like RAW says its more of a legal protection thing now.
