However, this article is concerned with encounters which didn’t quite go to the script, and more specifically with the most outrageous and unexpected comebacks in the history of the sport. It is an age-old adage in soccer that it “only takes a second to score a goal”, and whilst there is much truth in such a statement, it is very rare for teams to battle back from deficits of three or more goals. Having said that, whether it be through complacency or an inspired half-time team talk, on rare occasions, incredible comebacks do happen. A great comeback can often epitomize all of the best aspects of the sport; encompassing the highs, lows, ecstasy and deflation that come with the roller-coaster that is a game of soccer. This list is focused on the top 10 in-game comebacks in soccer history. The criteria which has been used to decide what makes a truly great comeback include: the stage; that is to say the importance of the fixture and occasion in which the turnaround took place, the scoreline; simply the amount of goals overturned in achieving the comeback, and lastly, the teams involved; the unexpected comeback of a lesser-fancied team accentuates the greatness of the comeback on some occasions. Hull City have been involved in several memorable comebacks. One I particularly remember watching at BP was the FA Cup Round 1 game against Crook Town in 1962. Crook were an amateur team but they took a 4-1 lead against us. Luckily we saved face and finished up winning 5-4.
On a local level Hull City's F.A. Cup match agains amatures Crook Town was something I actually saw and not on the tele. City were 4 - 1 down and I was stood amongst the Crook Town supporters and they taunted me merciously, I was about 13 at the time. But then a turn around and just before the final whistle City scored to make it 5 - 4 and a dejected band of Crook Town supporters trooped out of the ground having being denied a famous cup victory in the dying minutes. I rememer one incident where a Hull City supporter ran on the pitch after Crook Town had scored their 4th goal and pushed the City goalkeeper, Maurice Swann I think, out of the way and stood between the sticks only to be removed by the police.
not so much a come back but a reversal in the same season a 4-0 loss at St Marys then later in the season reversed that to a 5-nil win at the KC
Probably the most heart-breaking comeback was Luton against Manchester City in 1961. City were leading 6-2 with all six scored by Denis Law when the match was abandoned. The match was replayed and Luton won 3-1. You've guessed it - Law scored the City goal.
