Tme to help the land of the Gurkhas... http://www.dec.org.uk/ 'Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had a country more faithful friends than you' - Sir Ralph Turner MC, 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, 1931 Who are the Gurkhas?... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-10782099
I don't normally bother with appeals like this, but, the Ghurka's are extraordinary, and have been treated badly by us for years, and despite that, are still one of the finest group of people you could ever hope to meet.
The Ghurkas are an absolutely insane part of the British army, who have always been thrown right in the **** by us, into the worst conflicts, and they've never whinged a bit. Nepal is also home of mountaineering Sherpas, who without them, British people going out into the Himalayas to climb the 8k peaks like Everest, K2 etc. would almost certainly die. The Sherpas have selflessly done some extraordinary rescue missions saving lives of foreign climbers even at great risk to their own, and for very little pay. They also climb up all these mountains in the bad weather pre season to fix all the guide ropes.
If you're looking to support a worthy cause, this is it. The Government have said they will match the first £5million of public donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Earthquake Appeal. http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/573315/Nepal-earthquake-Gurkha-appeal-aid
Tip of the week: Never mess with a Gurkha... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1296136/As-Gurkha-disciplined-beheading-Taliban-Thank-God-side.htm It's payback time. They need our help now... http://www.dec.org.uk/
Anyone feeling uncomfortable or guilty about not giving to yet another disaster appeal? There are lots of books about the aid industry, I particularly like these 2, War Games: The Story of Aid and War in Modern Times by Linda Polman The Great Charity Scandal by David Craig I will be donating, haven't the heart not to, but if you ever wondered what happens to the money...
That's always the problem. Too many unscrupulous people making money from disasters like this is despicable but if you stick to official charities you will be fine. The link is via the BBC to the DEC who are coordinating the relief agencies. The only other option is to do nothing.
Well done that man. After donating to a charity I normally have a winning bet shortly afterwards. I can't guarantee that will work for you but good luck anyway.
The appeal has raised £19 million from the UK in just one day. https://paypal.dec.org.uk/?gclid=Cj...Ax-UC3sUYQc2IlIxItC7dInzaD2Sw-aSEMaAvms8P8HAQ
Stick your winnings on Southampton beating Sunderland tomorrow at odds of 21/20 and become an even happier bunny. It's hard to believe Sunderland are 2/5 favourites to be relegated. Can you imagine Defoe wanting to play in the Championship next season?
I've donated to Médicins Sans Frontières, Chaine d'Espoir, UNICEF regularly however on the advice of a friend who runs a Children's orphange in Cambodia, I've now changed the way I help. He tells me the NGOs operate a scam and the only way you can be sure your money goes to the right places is to get it there yourself. So that's what I try to do now. If you don't have this opportunity then I guess you'll have to put your faith in the charities.
I guess the safest bet is to stick with the DEC. Nepal Earthquake Update: A least 6,000 killed, 14,000 plus injured. More than 8m people have been affected and about 70,000 houses destroyed, the UN says.
There's just been another one... Sky News Newsdesk @SkyNewsBreak Update - Officials say Kathmandu airport has shut following new #earthquake of 7.4 magnitude that struck between #Nepal's capital & Everest
In recognition of his playing number, Cristiano Ronaldo has donated €7m to Save The Children Nepal Appeal. I don't care how much he earns, that's one hell of a donation, fair play to him. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/p...llion-to-the-humanitarian-cause-10244146.html
Yes, regardless of his wealth he deserves all the credit he gets. It would be nice to think other millionaire footballers will be following his example but I'm not convinced they'll be forming a queue.
The others are donating too, they just don't like talking about it. Yeah, pretty ****ty so soon after the last quake.
